A mob farm can solve several survival problems at once. Skeletons supply bones and arrows, spiders provide string, zombies add rotten flesh for cleric trades, and player kills produce the experience needed for enchanting and Mending. The useful version is not always the largest one. A controlled spawner room close to the base may serve a world better than a huge tower that takes hours to build and barely runs while the player is elsewhere.
Start by deciding whether the farm is for drops, experience, or both. A fully automatic kill chamber can collect items while you wait, but it normally gives up the experience from direct player kills. An XP farm needs a safe place where mobs arrive alive and can be finished without reaching the player.
Java and Bedrock do not handle every spawning, movement, and simulation rule in exactly the same way. Use a design made for the edition and release you play, especially for a large dark-room farm. The plan below covers the parts that stay useful across versions: control the spawning area, move mobs through a clear route, make the final hit safe, and test storage before closing the walls.
Choose Between a Spawner Farm and a Dark-Room Farm
A monster room is the easiest starting point. These small cobblestone rooms contain a zombie, skeleton, or spider spawner, and the spawner keeps producing that mob while a player waits close enough. The output is limited to one mob type, but the farm is compact, predictable, and much easier to diagnose.
A general dark-room farm uses normal hostile spawning instead. It can produce gunpowder, bones, arrows, string, rotten flesh, and other drops in one build, but it also competes with every dark cave in the active area. The tower needs more blocks, more spawn-proofing, and a carefully chosen waiting position. Build it after a spawner farm has taught you how water, fall damage, collection, and mob movement behave in your world.
Secure the Monster Room Before Building
Do not break the spawner. Light the room first, clear every mob, and block any cave opening that could let another enemy walk in. Torches placed on and around the spawner stop most monster-room activity while you work, although exact light placement can vary with the room and mob.

Make a safe entrance with a door or fence gate and leave yourself an exit that does not cross the future water channel. Store the building materials in a chest outside. If lava, gravel, or another cave sits behind a wall, finding it now is much better than opening it after the farm is active.
Give the Spawner Enough Open Space
Zombie and skeleton spawners work well in a room opened several blocks around every side of the cage, with enough height for mobs to appear and move. A common layout clears four blocks from the spawner in each horizontal direction. Keep the floor low enough that the mobs do not stand against the cage, but do not excavate the collection trench until the room itself is secure.
The player must wait near the spawner for it to activate. Plan the standing room before digging the kill chamber far away. If the final position leaves the player too distant, the cage goes dark and the farm stops. A small observation window makes this easy to check without opening the room.
Use Water to Give Every Mob One Exit
Water should push the mobs toward a trench, central hole, or bubble elevator without leaving dry corners. Place the sources from the outside edges and follow the current yourself before releasing the farm. Any full block, sign, trapdoor, or uneven floor that interrupts the stream can become a place where mobs gather.

One short water route is better than several clever turns. Zombies and skeletons move cleanly through a one-block-wide channel, while spiders can grip walls and spread across a wider space. If the stream reaches its limit before the drop shaft, lower the next section by one block and start a new source rather than leaving a dead patch.
Build the Kill Chamber Around the Reward You Want
For experience, move the mobs into a narrow holding space where their feet are visible but their attacks cannot reach the player. A short drop can reduce their health before they arrive, but test the height with several mobs. Armor, mob type, and crowding can change how many survive.
For drops only, the chamber can use a longer fall or another automatic damage source. Place hoppers under the final block and point them into a chest. Hoppers collect items, not experience orbs, so an automatic chamber should not be described as an XP farm unless the design includes a player-credit method that works in your edition.
Add a shutoff or access route. A lever-controlled light, blocked water path, or safe maintenance door lets the chamber empty before repairs. Never rely on breaking one wall and hoping the crowd stays inside.
Keep XP Kills Safe and Fast
Use a sweeping sword on Java or the attack rhythm that feels reliable on Bedrock, and leave enough space so drops and experience can reach the player. A slab-height opening usually keeps adult zombies and skeletons contained, but baby zombies need extra attention because they fit through smaller gaps.
Do not stand with valuable gear pressed against the chamber. Skeleton arrows can find unexpected angles, creepers can appear in a general farm, and too many mobs in one block can cause performance problems. A fence, retreat step, and nearby storage chest make the routine safer.
Spider Spawners Need Their Own Layout
A zombie or skeleton tutorial should not be copied block for block onto a spider spawner. Spiders climb walls, need more horizontal room, and can stop in the upper corners instead of following the water. A wider channel and a ceiling that limits climbing paths will reduce jams.
Cave spiders are smaller and can poison the player, so their holding area needs tighter gaps and a more defensive killing position. If the spawner is inside a mineshaft, close every tunnel before testing. The string is useful, but a poorly sealed cave-spider farm can turn a quick XP visit into a recovery trip.
A Dark-Room Tower Depends on Location
Normal hostile mobs in the Overworld need block light level zero to spawn. The inside of the tower must be completely dark, while the roof and surrounding ledges need lighting or non-spawnable blocks. A single open seam can brighten a platform and cut the output.
The waiting position controls which spaces are active. Nearby caves can fill the hostile-mob limit before the tower gets a chance, and Bedrock simulation distance changes how much of the world is running around the player. Farms built over an ocean or high above the ground are popular because there are fewer hidden caves competing below, but the player still needs an edition-specific distance plan.
Build one spawning level first. Watch where mobs stand, confirm that water or pathfinding moves them, and inspect the collection chest. Add more floors only after the first level produces reliably.
Fix a Slow Farm One Cause at a Time
- No mobs at all: check difficulty, light, player distance, and whether the spawner flame or cage animation is active.
- Mobs spawn but never arrive: inspect dry corners, blocked water, climbable walls, and the entrance to the drop shaft.
- Drops disappear: test every hopper direction and make sure items cannot land beside the collection blocks.
- The tower is very slow: look for nearby caves, surface spawning at night, incorrect waiting distance, or inactive chunks.
- The chamber is dangerous: reduce crowding, close arrow angles, block baby-zombie gaps, and add a way to stop new arrivals.
Change one thing, run the farm again, and watch the result. Rebuilding several sections at once makes it harder to identify the original failure.
Finish With Storage and a Safe Routine
A double chest is enough for the first version. Sort valuable drops later, after the farm has shown what it actually produces. Rotten flesh and bows can fill storage quickly, so leave space for overflow or remove unwanted items between sessions.
Before removing the work lights, check the entrance, waiting position, kill opening, hopper line, and escape route. Then activate the farm from outside the chamber and let only a few mobs reach the collection point. A controlled first test is slower than throwing every torch into a chest, but it protects the player and the build.
