Beating the Ender Dragon opens one of Minecraft's most useful late-game trips. The outer End islands hold End cities, shulker shells, valuable enchanted gear, and the elytra that turns long journeys into flights. Reaching that loot is not difficult because of one huge boss. It is difficult because a small mistake can send a full inventory into the void.
A careful End City run has three jobs: reach the outer islands, find a city with an End ship, and return with the elytra. Treating those as separate parts of the trip makes the whole expedition easier to plan.
Pack for a Long Trip With No Easy Supply Stop
Repair your armor and tools before leaving the Overworld. Diamond gear is comfortable, but strong iron armor can work if it has useful protection. Feather Falling boots are especially valuable because shulkers can lift you high above the city. Bring a bow, arrows, a dependable sword, a pickaxe, strong food, and several stacks of blocks.
Ender pearls handle the End Gateway and gaps between islands. Carry more than one stack if possible. A water bucket gives you a chance to stop fall damage, while milk clears the levitation effect from a shulker hit. Slow Falling potions are another good backup if brewing is available.
- Ender Chest: move rare loot into it as soon as you find it. Items stored inside remain available from another Ender Chest even if you die.
- Carved pumpkin: wear it when Endermen are causing trouble, then remove it when you need a clear view for bridging or fighting.
- Coordinates: record the central island, the gateway, and every major turn. The outer End has few landmarks and every island starts to look familiar.
Use the End Gateway After the Dragon Fight
The small bedrock End Gateway appears near the edge of the central island after the dragon is defeated. The opening is too small to walk through. Throw an Ender pearl into the dark center and the gateway teleports you to the outer islands, far from the main boss arena.
Check the landing area before moving. Some gateways place you on a small platform or near an exposed edge. Build a safe floor around the arrival point and save its coordinates. This gateway is also the normal route home, so a marked path now prevents a much harder search later.
If you plan to make several End trips, leave a chest with spare blocks, pearls, food, and a basic pickaxe near the gateway. A little supply point can rescue a future run without risking your best equipment.
Cross the Outer Islands Without Losing the Route
End cities generate on the larger outer islands. Walk across solid land when possible, then bridge the short gaps while crouching. Ender pearls are faster, but a bad throw near the void leaves less room to recover. Save pearls for the gateway, emergency escapes, and islands that are awkward to bridge.
Use a visible trail. Torches, cobblestone arrows, or two-block pillars stand out against End stone. Write down coordinates whenever the route changes direction. Blank locator maps can also help on supported versions, but simple markers remain useful when a map becomes hard to read.
Chorus fruit grows across the islands and can restore hunger, but eating it teleports you a short distance. Stay away from ledges before using it. Regular food is safer while bridging or moving through narrow city platforms.
Look for a City With a Floating Ship
An End city appears as tall purpur towers with branching rooms and bridges. Every city can offer shulkers and treasure, but an elytra only appears in an End ship. The ship floats beside some larger cities and is easy to miss when the structure is partly hidden behind a tower.

Scan the skyline from a safe island before entering. A city without a ship can still provide shulker shells and enchanted loot, but it will not finish the elytra search. Decide whether that loot is worth the climb or whether you would rather keep exploring while the inventory is still light.
Fight Shulkers Under Cover
Shulkers hide inside box-like shells on walls and floors. When they open, they fire slow homing projectiles that apply levitation. A shield can stop a projectile, and a bow lets you attack without standing beside an open edge. Wait until the shell opens before shooting or swinging.
Low ceilings make levitation much less dangerous. Fight from doorways, under platforms, or below a roof instead of stepping into the middle of a tall chamber. If a projectile hits, move under cover, drink milk to remove levitation, or prepare water below the landing spot. Feather Falling reduces the punishment but does not make every drop safe.
Two shulker shells and a chest make a shulker box. Those boxes become some of the best storage in the game, so collect the drops even if the elytra is the main goal. Put finished boxes and rare city loot into the Ender Chest instead of carrying everything through the next fight.
Loot the Towers Without Chasing Every Room
End city treasure rooms can contain diamonds, gold, iron, saddles, beetroot seeds, and enchanted diamond or iron gear. Take items that improve the world or replace equipment you might lose. A full inventory of average loot makes it harder to protect the one item you came to find.
Move vertically with stairs and blocks instead of relying on levitation. The effect can lift you to a useful platform, but another hit may carry you past it. Breaking through a wall is often safer than following an exposed staircase while several shulkers are firing.
Store the best finds before crossing to the ship. The Ender Chest is useful only after the items are placed inside it. Keeping every diamond and enchanted tool in the normal inventory until the end defeats the purpose of bringing one.
Reach the End Ship Carefully
The ship normally floats beside an upper bridge. Build a wide bridge with rails or walls if you have enough blocks. Ender pearling to the deck is quicker, but aim for the center of a large surface and keep a second pearl ready. A missed throw into the void will not teleport you, although the delay can still leave you standing in a dangerous position.
Shulkers may be attached to the outside and inside of the ship. Clear the deck before walking below. The brewing stand near the front usually holds Instant Health potions, and the dragon head at the bow can be mined as a decorative trophy.
The elytra hangs in an item frame inside the treasure room, guarded by a shulker. Defeat the shulker, break the frame, and place the elytra in the Ender Chest immediately if you are not ready to fly. There is no benefit in wearing it while fighting because it replaces the chestplate.
Learn the Elytra Over Safe Ground
Equip the elytra in the chest slot. Jump from a height and press the jump control again while falling to open it. Looking slightly down builds speed; pulling up trades that speed for height. Sharp turns slow the glide, and diving too steeply can turn a landing into a crash.

A first flight should happen over a field, not between End islands. Keep the chestplate in the hotbar so it can be equipped after landing. The elytra protects movement, not health, and a player wearing it gives up the armor normally provided by a chestplate.
Use Plain Firework Rockets for Powered Flight
A gliding elytra slowly loses height. Plain firework rockets add speed and let you climb, which turns the elytra into practical long-distance travel. Craft the rockets with paper and gunpowder. Do not add a firework star for routine flight; rockets with an explosion effect can damage the player using them.
Open the elytra first, then use a rocket while gliding. Point toward open sky and climb in a gentle angle. Repeated boosts aimed straight upward waste rockets and can leave you without enough forward speed. Carry food, rockets, and a safe place to land rather than trusting one stack to cover an unknown trip.
Unbreaking III slows durability loss, and Mending repairs the elytra when you collect XP orbs while wearing or holding it. Until those enchantments are added, watch the durability bar closely. A broken elytra stops working but remains repairable instead of disappearing.
Repair the Elytra and Return Home
Phantom membranes repair an elytra at an anvil and preserve its enchantments. Each membrane restores about one quarter of the durability. Combining two elytra also repairs them, but using a rare second pair as material is usually worse than keeping it as a backup.
Return along the marked path to the same End Gateway and throw a pearl through it. The central island's exit portal then sends you back to the Overworld. Avoid the shortcut of putting everything in an Ender Chest and jumping into the void unless you understand exactly what will remain protected and what will be lost.
- Before leaving home: pack pearls, blocks, food, water, milk, a bow, repaired armor, and an Ender Chest.
- On the outer islands: mark the gateway and every turn, bridge carefully, and search for a city with a visible ship.
- Inside the city: fight shulkers under low ceilings and move valuable loot into the Ender Chest early.
- After finding the elytra: store it or practice over safe land, then add Unbreaking III and Mending before long flights.
