The Ender Dragon fight begins long before the dragon appears. You need enough Eyes of Ender to reach a stronghold and activate its portal, a way to recover if the trip goes wrong, and gear that can handle both the boss and the Endermen covering the island. Walking into the End with a good sword but no bow, water, or spare blocks is how a long survival run turns into a rescue mission.
You do not need perfect netherite equipment or a speedrunner's bag of tricks. A careful route, decent armor, and a few backup supplies can carry a normal survival player from the Overworld to the credits without gambling everything on one jump.
Bring Gear That Solves the Real Problems
Enchanted diamond armor is the comfortable choice, but well-enchanted iron can work if you are patient. Protection and Feather Falling help more than a flashy weapon when the dragon launches you into the air. Repair everything before leaving home; the stronghold and boss fight are a poor place to discover that the chestplate has almost no durability left.
- Sword: use it when the dragon lands over the center portal. Sharpness helps, but a reliable weapon with good durability is enough.
- Bow and arrows: crystals and a flying dragon are much easier to hit from the ground. Bring two stacks of arrows unless the bow has Infinity.
- Pickaxe and blocks: the pickaxe opens routes through the stronghold, while two stacks of ordinary blocks cover bridges, towers, and quick shelters.
- Water bucket: water can stop Endermen from reaching you and may save a fall after the dragon throws you upward.
- Food and healing: carry strong cooked food, a few golden apples or healing potions, and Slow Falling potions if your brewing supplies allow it.
A carved pumpkin stops Endermen from becoming angry when you look at them, although the reduced view can make the dragon harder to track. Empty glass bottles are optional. They collect the purple dragon's breath left on the ground, but gathering it should wait until the area is safe.
Beds explode in the End. Experienced players use that explosion to damage the dragon during a speedrun, but the timing can kill an unprepared player just as quickly. A normal first victory is easier with a bow and sword.
Make More Eyes of Ender Than the Portal Needs
One Ender Pearl and one Blaze Powder make an Eye of Ender. The eyes point toward a stronghold, then fill the 12 frames around its End portal. Some frames may already contain an eye, but planning around lucky world generation can leave you underground with an unfinished portal.
Bring 16 to 20 Eyes of Ender if you want to avoid a return trip. Each thrown eye has a one-in-five chance of shattering, and every one lost during the search is one less available at the portal. Players traveling very far may want additional pearls and Blaze Powder stored separately so more eyes can be crafted along the way.
Leave a spare set of armor, food, blocks, and weapons at home before starting. The trip feels much less tense when one death does not remove every useful item from the world.
Follow the Eyes Without Wasting Them
Throw the first eye in an open area and watch the direction it travels. Pick it up if it drops, walk several hundred blocks, then throw again. Repeating the throw every few seconds only gives the eye more chances to break without adding useful information.
The search works in both Java and Bedrock Edition even though strongholds are distributed differently. Keep the coordinates from each throw. If the eye suddenly travels behind you, the stronghold is between the last two locations. Shorter throws will narrow the area until the eye moves downward toward the ground.
Mark the surface and dig a staircase instead of mining straight down. Strongholds can open into caves, ravines, and deep rooms. A staircase gives you a safe return path and makes it easier to carry replacement gear back to the portal if the fight goes badly.
Search the Stronghold Without Getting Lost
Strongholds are a maze of stone-brick corridors, staircases, libraries, doors, and dead ends. Put torches on the same side of every corridor and block completed dead ends with a visible marker. Random torches light the building; consistent torches also tell you how to leave.
The portal room has a short staircase, lava, an End portal frame, and a silverfish spawner. Listen for silverfish and lava while searching. If a corridor seems to stop for no clear reason, check nearby walls carefully because generation can hide connections behind stone.

Stronghold libraries and chests are worth checking, but store valuable finds before entering the portal. The End has no normal exit until the dragon is defeated. Dying sends you back to your spawn point and leaves the dropped equipment on the island.
Turn the Portal Room Into a Checkpoint
Break the silverfish spawner, light the room, and cover exposed lava without blocking the portal frame. Place a bed in a safe room nearby and sleep there to set your Overworld spawn. Add a chest with backup armor, a weapon, food, blocks, and another water bucket.
Write down the stronghold coordinates and mark the route from the surface. A recovery run should lead straight from the bed to the portal, not through another hour of searching corridors.
Fill the portal frames only after the checkpoint is ready. The portal activates when all 12 frames hold an Eye of Ender, creating a dark surface in the center. Check the hotbar, eat, equip the bow, and make sure the water bucket is easy to reach before jumping in.
Take a Second Before Leaving the Obsidian Platform
The End loads around an obsidian platform. It may connect to the main island or appear a short distance away from it. Look down and around before moving. If the platform is separated from land, build a wide bridge while crouching or mine a protected path if it generated inside End stone.
Endermen usually remain peaceful until you attack them or look directly at their faces. Keep the crosshair low while moving toward the center. Place water on a flat area if several become angry; they take damage from water and cannot follow you into it.
The tall obsidian towers are the first target, not the dragon. Crystals on top of them restore the dragon's health. Damage dealt before the crystals are gone can disappear almost immediately.
Destroy Every End Crystal
Shoot the exposed crystals with the bow from inside the ring of towers. Watch for the healing beam, which shows which crystal is active, and keep moving when the dragon fires a purple projectile. The cloud left behind continues to hurt, so walking out of it is more important than finishing one extra shot.

Some crystals are protected by iron-bar cages. Build upward beside the tower with solid blocks, break enough bars to expose the crystal, then move below the top edge before shooting it. End Crystals explode when destroyed, and standing beside one can end the run even in good armor.
Slow Falling makes tower climbs much safer. Without it, place water at the base before climbing and keep the bucket available for the descent. Do not jump from one tower to another or chase a falling item toward the void.
Use the Bow in the Air and the Sword at the Portal
Once the crystals are gone, shoot the dragon while it circles. Lead the shot slightly instead of aiming at the point where the dragon was a moment ago. There is no need to follow it around the island; stay near the center, keep a clear view of the towers, and let it return.
The dragon regularly lands and hovers over the bedrock exit portal. Players often call this perching. Arrows do not damage it during this phase, so approach from the side and strike the head with the sword. Hits to the head deal more damage than swings at the body or tail.
Move away when purple breath begins covering the ground or the dragon turns toward you. Standing under the head for one more hit is rarely worth losing most of the health bar. Heal, wait for the next landing, and repeat.
Control Endermen, Breath, and Fall Damage
An angry Enderman can be more distracting than the boss. Step into water and deal with it before returning to the dragon. If water is not available, a two-block-high roof creates a space the taller mob cannot enter.
Dragon's breath appears as purple particles that linger on the ground. Leave the cloud immediately. Glass bottles can collect it for lingering potions, but do not walk into active breath just to fill one. There will be more chances while the fight continues or after the dragon is respawned later.
Look up after a strong knockback. Slow Falling gives time to steer toward the island, while Feather Falling and a water landing reduce the damage. Keep eating between attacks so natural healing is working before the next launch.
Finish the Fight and Leave With the Rewards
When the dragon falls, the center exit portal activates and a gateway appears near the edge of the island. The first victory also produces a large amount of experience and places the dragon egg above the portal. The gateway leads toward the outer End islands, where End cities and elytra become the next major goal.
The dragon egg teleports when hit, so it cannot be collected like a normal block. Let it move onto solid ground, then use a piston or the falling-block-and-torch method to turn it into an item. Store it before doing anything risky near the void.
Jump into the center portal to return to the Overworld. The credits can be watched or skipped, and the same survival world remains available afterward. Repair the equipment, store the experience, and keep the stronghold checkpoint intact; it will be the starting point for End city trips and any future dragon rematch.
- Before the search: bring 16 to 20 Eyes of Ender, a bow, sword, water, food, blocks, a pickaxe, and fall protection.
- At the stronghold: mark the route, secure the portal room, set a nearby spawn, and leave backup gear in a chest.
- In the End: leave the obsidian platform carefully, avoid eye contact with Endermen, and destroy every crystal first.
- During the fight: shoot while the dragon flies, use the sword when it perches, and move out of purple breath immediately.
