Craft a mace with one Heavy Core above one Breeze Rod, then use it to strike a target while falling. A successful smash adds damage based on the fall and protects you from that fall's damage. Simply carrying the mace does not protect you: miss the target and the landing can still kill you.

The hard part is finding the Heavy Core in an Ominous Vault. Once you have the weapon, start with a modest drop and learn when to attack before trying a tall tower or a Wind Burst chain. This guide covers standard Java and Bedrock Survival versions that include Tricky Trials.

How to craft a mace

Place a Heavy Core directly above a Breeze Rod in the crafting grid. The result is one mace. Iron, copper and Netherite ingots are not ingredients, and a Wind Charge cannot replace the rod.

The Heavy Core goes above the Breeze Rod; no ingots or Wind Charges are needed.

Defeat a Breeze in a Trial Chamber to collect Breeze Rods. Save at least one for the weapon before turning your supply into Wind Charges. The Heavy Core comes from an Ominous Vault, opened with an Ominous Trial Key; a regular key and vault do not offer the same reward pool.

A Heavy Core is not guaranteed each time you use a key. Plan to explore another eligible vault if it does not appear rather than repeatedly feeding keys to one you have already opened. Our Trial Chambers guide covers finding the structure, triggering ominous trials and distinguishing the two keys.

How to land a smash attack

Equip the mace, fall toward a target and attack while it is within reach, before you land. A smash requires more than 1.5 blocks of falling distance. A swing from the ground is not the same attack, even if you see the mace hit the mob.

For your first attempt, choose a small ledge, an open landing area and a target you can see throughout the drop. Keep your aim on that target as you fall. If you swing too early, you may be out of reach; if you wait until you are standing beside it, you have lost the falling attack.

Start small enough that a missed swing is survivable with your current health and armor. Keep a normal melee weapon ready for enemies approaching from the ground. A mace is useful for a planned descending hit, not a reason to jump from every high ledge.

Line up the target during the drop and hit before landing.

More height adds more smash damage, but it also makes a miss more dangerous. Do not treat a staged Warden kill as a dependable Survival strategy: reaching the right height, holding the target in position and landing the attack are separate problems.

Density or Breach

Density increases the extra damage from falling. Breach reduces how effective the target's armor is. Choose for the fight you intend to take, not just the highest enchantment name available.

Mace enchantments at a glance

Density and Breach are alternatives. Wind Burst adds a bounce, not protection from every later landing.

Mace enchantments at a glance
SettingValue
Density I–VAdds damage to a falling smash. Available through the enchanting table and enchanted books.
Breach I–IVReduces the target’s armor effectiveness. Choose it instead of Density; available through the table and books.
Wind Burst I–IIILaunches you after a successful smash. Find a level I book in an Ominous Vault; combine books for higher levels.

Density is a useful starting choice when your plan is to drop onto mobs. Breach is worth considering when armor is the obstacle, especially in player-versus-player fights. Neither fixes a missed hit or replaces practicing the timing.

Density and Breach cannot be combined on one mace. They are also incompatible with Smite and Bane of Arthropods. If an anvil will not apply one of those books, inspect the weapon's existing enchantments before spending more experience or looking for another identical book.

Use our enchanting guide for the table, bookshelves and experience setup. Wind Burst is the exception to that usual table route.

How to get Wind Burst

Wind Burst launches you upward after a successful smash, letting you attempt another falling hit. It is an enchantment on the mace, not the throwable Wind Charge item.

Find a Wind Burst I enchanted book in an Ominous Vault. You cannot roll it at the enchanting table. Higher levels come from combining books at an anvil: two level I books make level II, and two level II books make level III.

Plan where the next jump will end. The upward launch starts a new landing risk; the first successful hit does not make the rest of a chain safe. Learn one clean smash before adding extra height or trying to bounce between several enemies.

Repair the mace before another run

A mace loses durability when used. Repair it with Breeze Rods at an anvil, or use Mending to restore an appropriately equipped mace with experience. Keep a repair supply rather than crafting every spare rod into Wind Charges.

Unbreaking and Mending are compatible with the weapon. Our Mending and XP guide explains how experience repairs equipped gear, including why holding or equipping the wrong damaged item changes where that repair goes.

If the recipe or item is missing entirely, check the edition and the version of the world or server you are playing. Updating your own client does not change a server's version or its rules. These steps describe the standard mace rather than a modded weapon.

For your next Trial Chamber visit, take the mace only after you have learned its timing. Keep food, armor, a conventional weapon and a way back out. Finding the rare ingredient is the start of learning the weapon, not protection from a bad landing.
