Marathon’s extraction mode is staying. After Bungie outlined a permanent PvE mode and experimental team deathmatch for December, game director Del Chafe III clarified that those additions will not replace the part of the game where players risk their gear against rival crews.
In a September 30 post from the Marathon development account, Chafe said extraction remains a major part of the game and will continue receiving updates. That matters if you watched the studio’s recent developer video and wondered whether the new modes meant Bungie was moving on from extraction entirely.
“Extraction is still a major part of Marathon”
The upcoming changes are also spread across different updates. October 6 is the progression and economy reset. December 8 is the planned launch of Symbiosis, including permanent PvE. Here’s what those dates mean, and why Bungie is trying to give players more ways into Tau Ceti IV.
Why Bungie wants more than extraction
The September 24 developer video is unusually direct about the launch. Members of the team describe a game that was too difficult for some of the people they hoped would enjoy it. They discuss how repeated deaths could prevent those players from getting far enough to find what they liked.
At around 1:17 in the video above, the conversation turns to expanding beyond the existing PvEvP experience. The developers talk about the need for both a PvE mode and a separate PvP mode. Later, they show a mode-selection screen as a starting point for different activities, rather than one route through the game.
That explains the purpose of the new modes without making them a replacement announcement. Someone who wants to explore the setting or learn the controls without an opposing crew can have a different entry point. Someone who enjoys the risk of extraction can keep playing that mode. Chafe’s later clarification makes that distinction explicit.
What changes on October 6
Bungie’s September 14 schedule update moved the larger content release from September 22 to December 8. The studio kept a progression and economy reset on October 6, alongside a new Rewards Pass, balance work and quality-of-life changes.
The studio said Nightfall progression had not gone as intended. Some players advanced faster than planned, while others fell behind on their way to higher-level activities. It wanted time to adjust progression and rewards before bringing the bigger update into the game.

For players deciding when to return, the useful distinction is simple: the October reset starts the next stretch of progression, but it is not the launch of all the new modes. Bungie also planned experiments during the weeks leading up to Symbiosis, including another limited run of Vault Breaker to help it assess PvE progression.
What Symbiosis is adding in December
The December 8 plan includes a permanent PvE mode, experimental team deathmatch, a new Runner and changes to Perimeter. Bungie has also listed a social space, a firing range and improvements to the first-time experience.
In its longer September 24 update, Bungie described an interconnected set of activities for solo players and crews. The aim is to let people learn, progress and spend time in Marathon without every session having to start with the same competitive demand.
Perimeter is also being changed. The preview shows a fungal environment with tall pale growths, red ground cover and new paths through the area. Bungie says it is working on new points of interest and higher-level encounters there. These are previews of work in development, not features already available in the live game.

The longer plan extends into March 2027 with another evolution of Marathon and a new zone. That is separate from the October reset and December’s Symbiosis update; combining all three into one launch date would give returning players the wrong expectation.
What stays familiar for extraction players
Marathon currently sends players into Tau Ceti IV alone or with a crew to collect loot, complete contracts and get out alive. Enemy forces and rival Runners can interrupt a run, and successfully extracting lets you keep what you brought back.
Runner shells have different abilities, while weapons and equipment support different builds. That preparation is part of the appeal: you decide what to take in, then try to make the trip worth the risk. The current PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S game is not being replaced by a December relaunch.
There are still details to come about how the permanent PvE mode will work and how its rewards will connect to other activities. Bungie’s promise is narrower than a complete rules breakdown: more ways to play are coming, and extraction remains part of that future. The next date for existing players to watch is October 6.
