A perfect pelt is not created after the animal dies. It starts with a three-star animal, survives only if you use the right weapon, and can still be ruined by a sloppy shot. RDR2 explains pieces of that system through the Compendium, but it is easy to spend an hour hunting deer and return to camp with nothing Pearson can use.
The full Legend of the East Satchel project requires 21 perfect pelts or skins: seven deer, two elk, and one from twelve other animals. You can begin in Chapter 2 once the camp ledger and Leather Working Tools are available.
A Perfect Pelt Starts With a Three-Star Animal
Study an animal through binoculars, a scope, or close observation, then check the stars beside its name. One- and two-star animals cannot normally become perfect just because the kill is clean. If you need a crafting pelt, let those animals walk and keep searching for a three-star target.

After studying the species, open its Compendium entry. The game tells you which weapon or ammunition gives a clean kill. Aim for the head or neck and avoid a second shot whenever possible. Dead Eye becomes especially useful once it shows vital areas, but careful aim works from the beginning.
Match the Weapon to the Animal
The exact Compendium entry should win any argument, especially for birds and unusual species. These groups cover the animals needed for Pearson's satchels and most common hunting trips.
- Tiny animals and small birds: use Small Game Arrows. This includes squirrels, rats, frogs, toads, and many birds.
- Rabbits, raccoons, badgers, skunks, muskrats, and beavers: use the Varmint Rifle.
- Foxes and coyotes: use a repeater or a bow with regular arrows.
- Deer, pronghorn, sheep, goats, wolves, cougars, and panthers: use a rifle or a bow with an appropriate arrow and land one vital shot.
- Elk, moose, bison, bears, and alligators: use a powerful rifle with suitable ammunition or improved arrows.
Shotguns, explosive ammunition, and repeated body hits are for survival, not pelt quality. Clean the weapon before a long hunt. A badly degraded rifle loses accuracy and damage, which turns an easy headshot into a wounded animal and a damaged pelt.
What the Buck Antler Trinket Really Does
Hunt the Legendary Buck, take its parts to a Fence, and craft the Buck Antler Trinket. It improves the quality of skinned animal materials and can help preserve a pelt when a three-star animal is slightly damaged by the kill. It does not reliably turn an animal that started at one or two stars into a perfect pelt.
Use the trinket as insurance, not permission to ignore weapon choice. Start with three stars, use the correct gun or arrow, and aim for a vital point. If the carcass shows two stars after the shot, skinning it may still produce a perfect pelt, but the trinket is never a reason to hunt low-quality animals for Pearson.
Unlock Pearson's Satchel Crafting
In Chapter 2, complete enough of the early camp story to open the ledger behind Dutch's tent. Buy Leather Working Tools for Pearson. Every satchel also has a camp task, such as upgrading a wagon or donating valuables, before the recipe becomes available.
Donate each required pelt to Pearson and confirm the menu says it can be used for crafting. Do not sell those pelts to a butcher or the Trapper. A large pelt stored on the horse can also be lost if Arthur dies before reaching camp, so make a manual save after difficult hunts.

The Complete 21-Pelt Shopping List
- 7 perfect deer pelts
- 2 perfect elk pelts
- 1 each: badger, beaver, bison, boar, buck, cougar, iguana, panther, rabbit, raccoon, squirrel, and wolf
Deer are required for every satchel, so donate perfect deer whenever you find them until Pearson has seven. Elk are the only other repeated animal. Keeping this total list beside the individual recipes stops you from riding back to camp with a third perfect elk and no idea whether it is still useful.
A Faster Hunting Route
Start in the Heartlands for deer, buck, rabbit, raccoon, and bison. Move west toward Owanjila and Big Valley for beaver, elk, and a reliable cougar region. Lemoyne covers boar, badger, and panther; the woods around Old Harry Fen south of Braithwaite Manor are a known panther area. Iguanas live on the large island west of Clemens Point, which Arthur can reach before the epilogue.

Wolves appear in the Grizzlies and other northern routes, often as a pack rather than a quiet target. Save before entering predator country, keep a rifle ready, and use Dead Eye to identify a three-star animal before the whole encounter becomes close-range panic. Predator bait can help with cougars and panthers, but patience and a safe position matter more.
Small Mistakes That Waste Good Pelts
- Do not use the wrong weapon just because it kills faster.
- Do not trample the carcass with your horse while riding over to skin it.
- Do not sell Pearson's recipe pelts to the Trapper or butcher.
- Do not leave a large pelt on the horse through a death or an unsaved risky mission.
- Do not assume the Buck Antler Trinket fixes one- and two-star animals.
The cleanest way to finish the satchels is to treat each three-star animal as a small puzzle: confirm quality, check the weapon, take one shot, and decide where the material belongs before riding away. Once that habit clicks, hunting stops feeling random and Pearson's long list becomes a manageable route across the map.
