Red Dead Redemption 2 is an open-world western set in 1899, near the end of the American frontier era. Rockstar Games follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang after a robbery in Blackwater forces them to flee. Lawmen and bounty hunters pursue the group while its members search for money, safety, and a place where they can continue living outside the law.

Read full overview

Arthur is the gang's enforcer and the main viewpoint for the story. He takes part in robberies, shootouts, rescues, and other missions, but the game also gives him long stretches of travel and time at camp. His relationships with Dutch van der Linde, John Marston, Hosea Matthews, Sadie Adler, and the rest of the gang change as internal disagreements become harder to ignore. Arthur's actions affect his honor, which changes parts of the story, dialogue, and some encounters.

Players can hunt, fish, pursue bounties, help strangers, play poker, rob stagecoaches, collect plants and animals, maintain weapons, care for horses, and contribute supplies to camp. Towns, wilderness, wildlife, changing weather, and random encounters make exploration part of normal play. Many activities provide money, equipment, food, crafting materials, or new conversations with gang members.

The game deliberately includes long rides, detailed animations, conversations, camp chores, and travel between missions. This slower pace gives the story time to show changes in Arthur, the gang, and the country around them. Red Dead Online is a separate multiplayer mode in the same world, with custom characters, cooperative missions, competitive activities, specialist roles, and open-world exploration.
