Overview

A GTA 5 story mode mission guide covering campaign structure, playable-character flow, heists, assassination timing, and finale choices.

Campaign utility

Story Flow, Heists, and Ending Choices

A structured campaign view that keeps the early flow practical and saves the major ending details for clearly labeled spoiler cards.

Low spoiler

Main flow overview

GTA 5 moves from the North Yankton prologue into Franklin-led Los Santos missions, then opens Michael and Trevor before the three-protagonist campaign converges.

Planning

Major heists

The main heist strands are The Jewel Store Job, The Merryweather Heist, The Paleto Score, The Bureau Raid, and The Big Score. Save before approach and crew choices if you want to compare routes.

Practical notes

Before the final mission

Make a manual save before the finale, clean up optional prep you care about, and consider leaving optional Lester assassination missions until after the main story for more investment cash.

Spoiler

Ending choices

Spoilers: Franklin is pushed into Something Sensible, The Time's Come, or The Third Way. The Third Way is the Deathwish path and keeps the three-protagonist structure intact after the finale.

Story mode mission basics

This guide is for GTA 5 story mode, not GTA Online. It covers the main campaign flow for Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, plus the mission types that move the single-player story forward.

Main story missions usually appear on the map with character initials or story markers. Some missions become available at the same time, so a single playthrough can vary slightly without breaking story progress.

Use manual saves before major mission chains, heist approach choices, and the finale. That gives you room to replay a different path without losing your current campaign state.

Main mission order and structure

GTA 5 starts with the North Yankton prologue, moves into Franklin-led Los Santos missions, opens Michael and Franklin story work, then brings Trevor into the playable rotation before the three-protagonist campaign fully converges.

The mission list is not a perfect straight line. Character-specific missions have their own order, but the map can offer more than one valid next step once several protagonists are active.

For clean progress, finish available main-story initials before drifting too far into side activities. If a mission does not appear, switch characters, check messages, sleep to advance time, or finish another active story marker.

Heists and setup missions

The main story includes five major heist strands: The Jewel Store Job, The Merryweather Heist, The Paleto Score, The Bureau Raid, and The Big Score.

Heists can include setup missions, approach decisions, crew choices, or prep work before the final job. Those choices can change mission details and payouts, so save before committing if you want to compare routes.

This guide focuses on mission flow rather than maximum payout. For cash planning, treat heist choices and crew cuts separately from the stock-market strategy tied to Lester missions.

Lester assassinations and money timing

Franklin has a set of Lester assassination missions. The Hotel Assassination is required for story progress, while the other assassination missions are optional story-mode work.

If you care about ending the campaign with more cash, leave the optional assassination missions until after the main story when possible. That lets all three protagonists invest more money before the stock moves.

For the actual stock plan, use the existing GTA 5 Money and Stock Market Guide. This story guide only flags the timing issue so you do not accidentally spend the optional Lester missions too early.

Ending choices spoiler warning

Spoilers start here. Near the end of GTA 5, Franklin is pushed into a finale choice with three paths: Something Sensible, The Time's Come, or The Third Way.

Something Sensible is the path that targets Trevor. The Time’s Come is the path that targets Michael. The Third Way is the Deathwish path and keeps the three-protagonist structure intact after the finale.

Make a manual save before choosing. The finale path affects the postgame state, so a clean save lets you see another ending later without rebuilding the whole campaign.

Practical mission tips

Watch character-switch prompts and map initials closely. If the game nudges you toward another protagonist, that is often the next clean step in the campaign chain.

Do not mix GTA Online mission advice into story mode. GTA Online has separate jobs, contact missions, heists, money systems, and progression.

If you are playing for completion, keep a separate save before major heists and the finale, then use mission replay or the in-game checklist to clean up objectives after the story is stable.
