Free Fire MAX gives every character one skill, but a useful build needs more than four popular names. The active skill has to fit the way you take fights, and the three passive skills should solve problems that show up often. A player who stays at medium range needs a different setup from someone who enters buildings first or supports a full squad.
OB54 changed several reliable choices. Garena, the publisher behind Free Fire, reduced Chrono's cooldown from 60 seconds to 45 seconds and improved Olivia's team healing. Nero, Maro, Oscar, and Nikita were reduced in different ways. Those changes do not make the affected characters useless, but they do change which combinations are easier to recommend in July 2026.
Only one active skill can be equipped at a time. Start with that character, then add three passive skills that support the same job. The builds below are practical starting points for Battle Royale and Clash Squad, not fixed rules that every player must copy.
Best character setups after OB54
Chrono is the safest all-purpose active choice after the cooldown reduction. His force field blocks incoming damage, giving you time to heal, revive, reload, or cross a dangerous angle. He is especially useful for players who sometimes get caught away from solid cover.

- Safe BR build: Chrono, Moco, D-Bee, and Jota. Chrono provides emergency protection, Moco helps track enemies you hit, D-Bee supports accurate movement while firing, and Jota adds health recovery during gunfights.
- Fast CS build: Alok, Kelly, Hayato, and Jota. Alok adds healing and movement speed, Kelly helps with quick repositioning, Hayato improves armor penetration as health drops, and Jota helps you recover during repeated close fights.
- Squad support build: Kassie, Olivia, Kapella, and Thiva. Kassie handles direct healing, while Olivia, Kapella, and Thiva improve the team's ability to heal, rescue, and return to a fight.
- Gloo Wall pressure build: Skyler, Moco, Hayato, and D-Bee. Skyler attacks Gloo Walls, while the passive skills help you mark a target, move while firing, and keep damage useful against armored opponents.
Nikita still works well for players who rely on shotguns or SMGs, but OB54 reduced her reload bonus from 30 percent to 20 percent. Oscar also remains useful for breaking Gloo Walls and entering defended rooms, although his longer 60-second cooldown means every dash needs a clear purpose. Nero can still control an area, but his plushie now has only 1 HP and his damage was lowered, so opponents have a much easier response.
The anniversary version of OB54 also includes temporary Skill Boost choices for Alok, Koda, Homer, Chrono, Kassie, Skyler, Wukong, and Oscar. These upgrades can change how a match plays, but the base combinations above still make sense when the anniversary event is no longer active.
Choose the build that matches your role
Battle Royale rewards skills that help you survive a bad rotation, recover after a fight, or find an enemy before they see you. Chrono and Alok are dependable because their active skills stay useful through early looting, mid-match movement, and the final circles. Moco is helpful for squads that communicate because a marked enemy is easier for teammates to follow.

Clash Squad gives healing, close-range pressure, and fast trades more value because the fights begin sooner. Alok and Kassie support repeated rounds well. Skyler is useful when the other team builds around Gloo Walls. Chrono is still a strong option, but using the shield too early can leave the team without it when the final push begins.
Solo players should avoid support builds that need a coordinated teammate to show their full value. Squad players can take those combinations much further by deciding who heals, who starts the fight, and who carries information skills. Two teammates do not need to bring the same active skill when different tools can cover more situations.
Test one build for several matches before changing it. If you keep dying while crossing open ground, try Chrono. If your squad loses long fights because healing runs out, use Alok or Kassie. If enemies keep resetting behind Gloo Walls, use Skyler. A build is useful when it fixes a problem you can clearly name.

OB54 made Chrono and Olivia easier to recommend, but there is no single combination that covers every mode. Pick an active skill for your main job, add passive skills that support it, and change only the part that is failing in real matches.
