A Fortnite party can include players on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile. The confusing part is usually not the match. It is finding the correct Epic display name, checking crossplay settings, and making sure every platform is connected to the Epic account that holds your progress.

Do not unlink accounts just to see what happens. If different platforms show different lockers or levels, first identify which account has the progress you want to keep. Epic says separate progress cannot be combined.

How to Add Friends and Start a Crossplay Party

Open Fortnite and select your profile icon in the lobby. Choose Add Friends, enter the other player's Epic display name, and send the request. The name must be the Epic display name, which may not match the person's PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo username.

  • Ask your friend to confirm the spelling, numbers, spaces, and capitalization shown on their Epic profile.
  • After the request is accepted, select the friend in your list and invite them or join their open party.
  • Choose Duos, Trios, Squads, Reload, or another mode that supports the size of your group.
  • If an invite fails, have everyone return to the lobby and confirm that Fortnite is fully updated.

On PlayStation, cross-platform play appears under Settings, Account and Privacy, then Gameplay Privacy. Xbox uses the console's cross-network settings. Epic says crossplay cannot currently be disabled on Nintendo Switch, PC, or mobile. Turning it off on a supported console can increase queue times and prevents parties with other platforms.

A child may be using an Epic Cabined Account with limited social features until a parent or guardian completes the required setup. Check the account permissions if the friend menu, voice chat, or linking options are missing.

The party leader should select the mode after everyone joins. Some experiences have a smaller team limit or do not support every device. If one person cannot ready up, switch to a standard Epic-made mode to see whether the problem belongs to the party or the selected island.

How Account Linking and Shared Progress Work

Your Epic Games account connects the platforms. Link the PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, PC, or mobile account you use to the same Epic account, then sign in with that account on every device. Purchased items and progress are generally available across linked platforms.

Before linking a second device, sign in to Epic using the platform that already shows your main locker. Check the Linked Accounts page and confirm the Epic display name and email. If a console signs you into a different Epic account, stop before unlinking anything and follow Epic's platform-specific recovery steps.

A safer linking order looks like this:

  • Open a private browser window and choose the PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo sign-in icon for the platform that already has your progress.
  • Confirm that the Epic display name and locker belong to the account you want to keep.
  • Open Linked Accounts and connect the second platform from that same Epic account.
  • Launch Fortnite on the new device and check the locker before buying anything or earning new progress.
  • Only one account of each platform type can be linked to an Epic account at a time.
  • Two separate Fortnite progress records cannot be merged. You must choose which one to keep using.
  • Unlinking the wrong account can hide the locker you expected to see until the correct link is restored.
  • Platform linking restrictions may limit how often an old console connection can be replaced.

V-Bucks need one extra check. Most supported platforms use Fortnite's Shared Wallet, but purchased V-Bucks on Nintendo Switch do not appear on other platforms. In Korea, purchased PC V-Bucks also have a platform restriction. V-Bucks earned through passes, Quest Packs, or Save the World are shared, and items bought with V-Bucks remain available across linked platforms.

A different V-Bucks balance does not always mean the account failed to sync. Check the locker and Battle Pass progress first. If those match but the currency does not, the Shared Wallet rules are the likely explanation.

When crossplay stops working, check the Epic display name, privacy setting, game version, party size, and linked account before reinstalling the game. Most problems come from one of those account or lobby details, not from the platform itself.

If the problem continues, take a screenshot of the error and note which Epic display name appears on each device. Those two details make Epic Support much more useful than a general report that crossplay is broken.
