Epic's Fortnite Creative and Unreal Editor for Fortnite, known as UEFN, give outside developers tools to build and publish islands for the Fortnite audience. Players can find those experiences through Discover, which organizes islands into rows and recommendations based on factors such as player interests, play history, engagement, and satisfaction. Epic has also introduced genres and creator-facing tools to help players find different kinds of islands.

Battle Royale remains one part of the platform. Epic's original mode combined 100-player competition, a large map, building, and destructible environments. Other modes use different rules and goals, so Fortnite functions as a collection of connected experiences rather than one fixed format. Creative and UEFN islands can range from small social spaces to complete games with their own objectives, maps, devices, and progression.

Seasonal updates change official modes, maps, items, and collaborations. Creator-made islands can also change when their developers publish new versions. Epic controls the platform systems, publishing rules, moderation, and official modes, while independent creators control the design and maintenance of their own islands.
