A character can have the recommended artifact set and still feel weak if their level, weapon, or important talents were ignored. Genshin Impact separates character power across several menus. You do not need to finish every menu at once, and you should not spend the same amount on every character.
Choose the character's job first. An on-field damage dealer stays active for most of the rotation. An off-field damage dealer uses a Skill or Burst and then leaves the field. Supports provide buffs, shields, healing, enemy control, or elemental application. Some characters perform two or three of these jobs.
Read the Talents Before Spending Materials
Open the Talents screen and read the descriptions for the Normal Attack, Elemental Skill, Elemental Burst, and passive talents. The text shows what the ability does and often states which stat controls its damage, healing, or shield. Do not assume every character wants ATK. Some abilities use HP, DEF, Elemental Mastery, or another condition.
Only level talents the character uses. An off-field support who never performs Normal Attacks may not need that talent upgraded. A character whose main damage comes from the Elemental Skill may need the Skill before the Burst. The in-game Training Guide lists common talent priorities and materials, but the character's actual job in your team should make the final decision.
Constellations can change a role or talent priority, but they are not a basic requirement for building a usable character. Finish the build you own. Do not plan around a Constellation that is not on the account.

Upgrade Reliable Power Before Random Artifacts
- Raise and Ascend the character to the level needed for their important passive talents and current content.
- Level a suitable weapon. Its base stat, secondary stat, and passive should support the character's job.
- Upgrade the talents used in the team's normal rotation.
- Equip artifacts with useful main stats, then improve the set and substats over time.
This order is a starting point, not a fixed rule for every roster. Characters that trigger certain reactions can gain a large improvement from higher character levels. A healer may already keep the team alive without reaching the maximum level. A weapon is often efficient to raise because its main values increase predictably, while artifact substats are random.
A five-star weapon is not required. Many four-star weapons and some three-star weapons have useful secondary stats or passives. Check whether the weapon provides Energy Recharge, Elemental Mastery, CRIT, HP, DEF, or ATK that the character can actually use. Weapon Refinement improves the passive by consuming another copy, while Weapon Enhancement raises its level.
Artifacts Without the Confusion
Each character equips five artifacts: Flower, Plume, Sands, Goblet, and Circlet. The Flower always has flat HP as its main stat, and the Plume always has flat ATK. The other three slots can roll different main stats. Set bonuses activate when the required number of pieces from one set is equipped.
Choose the correct main stats before chasing perfect substats. Energy Recharge helps a character use an expensive Burst on time. Elemental Mastery improves many reaction-based builds. CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG support damage that can score critical hits. Healing Bonus, HP, DEF, ATK, and elemental damage can be correct when the talent descriptions and role support them.
Early players can use mixed sets with good main stats. Dedicated artifact farming becomes more efficient after Adventure Rank 45 unlocks the highest domain level and its five-star artifact reward. The Training Guide and Recommended Artifact tools can show popular choices, but popularity does not replace reading the character's abilities.

Spend Resin on the Missing Upgrade
Character bosses, weapon material Domains, talent material Domains, Ley Line Outcrops, and artifact Domains all use Original Resin when rewards are collected. Check what blocks the next useful upgrade before spending. Mora and experience books are valid choices when a character cannot be leveled, even if farming artifacts looks more exciting.
Focus on one working team before building the full roster. Bring the main damage source and the team's survival option up first, then improve off-field damage and support. Artifact farming can continue for weeks without producing the exact substats you want. Levels, Ascensions, weapons, and talents reach a clear stopping point.
Use the Genshin Impact team-building guide to decide each character's job before choosing their stats. The beginner guide explains World Level and early progression if those systems are still limiting your upgrades.
