Your Sim needs a job? Start with the Sim, not the menu

A career brings regular pay and a little structure to your Sim’s week. In Live Mode, select the portrait of the Sim who should take the job first. Otherwise it is easy to open the job picker for the wrong household member.

There are three dependable paths to Find a Job. You only need one of them; choose whichever is easiest to spot on your screen.

Phone, computer and the lower-right briefcase all lead to the job picker.

Find a Job: phone, computer or Career Panel

  1. Phone: open the phone in Live Mode, choose Business and then Find a Job.
  2. Computer: click a usable computer, choose Career, then Find a Job. If your household has no computer, use the phone or Career Panel instead.
  3. Career Panel: click the briefcase icon at the lower right of Live Mode and choose Join a Career.
  4. In the job picker, choose a career and read the description, pay and work schedule before confirming. This matters if you want your Sim home at a certain time for school, family or a skill hobby.

Real job picker: careers appear in the left list; pay and hours for the selected career appear on the right.

The Athlete example in the screenshot is only one possible career. Do not assume every career has the same hours, skills or daily task.

Read the Career Panel like a progress checklist

Real Career Panel: find the schedule at the top, the performance bar in the middle and the daily task below it.

After your Sim joins, reopen the briefcase panel. It shows the current job, next shift, available vacation days, daily task and promotion requirements. You do not need to memorize them; the panel changes as your Sim progresses.

The performance bar shows work progress. A daily task is something to do between shifts, such as practicing a skill or using a computer. Promotion requirements may ask for a specific skill level. Completing just one of these is not always enough; inspect every requirement for your current rank.

The routine that makes promotions less mysterious

Illustrated promotion loop: check panel, do task and skill, go to work, recheck panel.
Repeat the loop after each shift instead of guessing what the next promotion needs.
  1. Before work, open the Career Panel. Note the next start time, daily task and any skill requirement.
  2. Use free time to do the task. If it says Practice Music, for example, buy an instrument in Build Mode, click it and choose Practice. If it names a skill, use an object or activity that raises that skill and check the progress.
  3. Send the Sim to work on time and keep their basic needs in good shape. Some careers benefit from a particular mood, such as Focused or Inspired; check your specific career rather than assuming one mood helps every job.
  4. After the shift, reopen the panel. If the task reset or the next skill requirement changed, plan the next day around the new text.

You do not need a cheat for ordinary promotions. If you want cheats anyway, Pixel Twelve already has a separate cheats and codes guide; this page focuses on playing the career system.

Rabbit-hole jobs, active careers and part-time work

In a standard rabbit-hole career, your Sim leaves the lot when their shift starts and returns afterward. You do not follow them into the workplace. A part-time job also takes the Sim away but often offers shorter or different shift options.

An active career can let you travel to work with the Sim and complete tasks there. These roles depend on specific packs; do not expect an active-work prompt from every base-game career. The EA career list marks where pack-specific roles come from.

When comparing jobs, ask what story you want: a steady paycheck, a schedule that leaves afternoons free, or an active job you can play through. “Best job” is not just the highest number of Simoleons.

Branches, quitting and changing jobs

When a branch prompt appears, read the new path before choosing; the panel then updates.

Many careers eventually split into branches. When the choice appears, read what each branch is about; the pay, schedule and future tasks can differ. After choosing, open the briefcase again. What got your Sim promoted before may not be the next requirement.

If the career no longer fits your household story, select the correct Sim, open the phone, choose Business → Quit Job, and confirm. A computer can also show Career → Quit Job. You can then use Find a Job again. EA notes that a new career usually starts at level 1, with exceptions for a previously held career or a relevant university degree.

  • Not seeing a promotion? Check four things in order: the correct Sim is selected, the daily task is complete, all listed skill requirements are met, and the Sim has actually worked enough shifts to raise performance.

A first-career example you can copy

Say your Sim joins Entertainer, a base-game career with Musician and Comedian branches. Open the briefcase after accepting the job. If the current daily task says Practice Music, go to Build Mode, open Hobbies and Skills, buy an affordable instrument, then return to Live Mode and click that instrument to choose Practice. Check the briefcase again to see whether the task has registered.

If the task instead says Write Jokes, click a computer, open More Choices and choose Write Jokes. The exact daily task depends on the current level, so do not follow an example blindly: match the action to the words on your own Career Panel.

The same reading method works for other careers. Find the object or menu named by the task, perform the action, check the panel, then complete the listed skill requirement. When the branch prompt eventually appears, read both paths before choosing. There is no universal “always pick this branch” answer for every household.

If the workday is not going as planned

  • The job button is missing: first check the portrait of the selected Sim. Then use one of the other two Find a Job paths—phone, computer or the lower-right briefcase. A computer is optional for joining a career.
  • The daily task is not moving: read its exact wording again. “Practice Music” needs practice, not simply owning a guitar; “Write Jokes” is a computer action, not telling a joke in conversation. Some tasks take time before the panel updates.
  • The performance bar is high but no promotion: look for an unmet skill or other listed requirement. Keep working regular shifts and check the panel after each one. A single good mood or one completed task is not an automatic promotion.

The panel also shows vacation days. If your household needs a break, check that number before skipping work. A Sim’s career should fit the story you are playing, not take every hour from it. You can switch jobs later without deleting your Sim or starting a new save.

Pack-specific careers and active-work destinations are not in every installation. If a job in a creator’s screenshot is missing from your picker, look up its required pack before assuming your game is broken.
