The Sims 4 is an open-ended life simulation with no fixed campaign or single protagonist. Create a Sim lets players shape a character's appearance, voice, personality traits, and aspirations, then combine Sims into a household and place them in a neighborhood.

Build Mode is used to plan floor layouts, furnish rooms, alter terrain, and design complete lots. Live Mode follows the people who occupy those spaces: careers, school, relationships, needs, skills, money, aging, and unexpected autonomous decisions all affect the stories that emerge. Players can direct a household closely or leave more choices to the simulation.

The base game has been free since October 18, 2022. It includes the Gallery, an online library where players can share and download Sims, households, rooms, and lots. Optional packs and kits add worlds, careers, activities, clothing, decor, and other systems, while free updates continue to adjust the base game. The current version is available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
