A counter in Marvel Rivals is not an automatic win. Maps, Team-Ups, bans, player skill, and team communication can change a matchup. A useful counter gives the team a clearer way to attack the problem: remove a deployable, deny a safe position, force a defensive ability, or punish an escape.
This guide uses the Season 9 game state checked on July 30, 2026. Community-tracked high-rank data showed Peni Parker as the strongest common answer in several popular matchups, but those results do not prove that picking Peni causes every win.
Check the Problem Before Switching
Watch one lost fight before changing heroes. If Peni Parker's Spider-Nest stayed active for the entire fight, the Nest may be the problem. If Mantis used Spore Slumber after every dive, the team may be attacking before that ability is used. If Storm hit several players with one Ultimate, spacing may need to change.
- Identify the ability or position creating the advantage.
- Choose a hero who can safely attack that problem.
- Tell the team what should be destroyed, avoided, or forced first.
- Give the switch one or two organized fights before changing again.

How to Counter Popular Season 9 Heroes
Peni Parker
Destroy the Spider-Nest from a safe distance before walking into the web. Clear mines and drones when they block the objective route. Peni receives healing, movement, and area control from her web, so fighting her inside a prepared Nest gives her the conditions she wants. Force her away from that area or take a different angle.
Peni does not have one guaranteed hero counter in the current data. Ranged damage helps remove the Nest without entering the mine area. Coordinated pressure from two angles also makes it harder for her to protect the deployable and the objective at the same time.
Mantis
Track Spore Slumber before committing to a dive. If Mantis has it ready, send one player to force it or attack from an angle where a missed sleep can be punished. Shoot the illusion to wake a sedated teammate instead of leaving that player out of the fight.
Mantis uses Life Orbs for healing and damage boosts. Sustained pressure can reduce her available resources, but chasing her alone can place the attacker outside team healing. Peni was the clearest statistical answer in the July 30 high-rank snapshot, although the matchup still depends on the map and how well the Nest is protected.
Magik
Track both Stepping Disc charges. Save crowd control or focused damage for the moment Magik leaves a disc, when her next movement choice is easier to read. Do not give her free damage on a Vanguard because her passive converts damage into Bonus Health.
Ranged pressure and defensive control can make her approach difficult. Peni and Mantis both showed favorable high-rank results against Magik in the July 30 data. The practical reason is clear: mines, web control, and sleep can punish a close-range attack when those abilities are held for her entry.

Storm
Use cover and attack from separate angles so Storm cannot pressure the whole team at once. Hitscan attacks are easier to aim at a flying target, but that does not make every hitscan hero a hard counter. The player still needs a clear line of sight and enough distance to avoid being rushed.
Spread before Omega Hurricane. One player caught by the Ultimate is easier to save than an entire team standing together. Peni and Mantis also had favorable tracked results against Storm, but positioning remains the most immediate fix.
Ultron
Force Dynamic Flight before using the team's best chase or burst abilities. When the movement ability ends, attack before it returns. Avoid grouping in the path of Rage of Ultron, and use cover to reduce how many teammates are hit by one attack.
The July 30 data showed Peni as the strongest common answer, with Mantis, Daredevil, Black Panther, and Storm also producing favorable results. Treat that list as a current starting point. It does not replace checking the map, the player's preferred role, or the rest of the enemy team.
When a Hero Switch Will Not Fix the Fight
A correct hero can still fail when the team enters at different times, attacks different targets, or uses every defensive ability before the enemy commits. If the same problem continues after a switch, check timing and focus fire instead of changing again immediately.
The Marvel Rivals Hero Tier List shows the broader Season 9 roster. The Season 9 Team Comps Guide provides complete teams when one counter pick is not enough.
Choose a counter the player can actually use. A familiar hero with the right ability for the problem is usually more useful than an unfamiliar statistical counter. Identify the problem, explain the plan, and make the switch support that plan.
