Stephen Root has confirmed that he is part of Grand Theft Auto VI. Speaking to the Associated Press at the BAFTA TV Tea Party, the veteran actor said viewers will see him in the game and laughed that his distinctive voice had already given the secret away. He did not name his character.

Fans have spent months connecting Root to Brian Heder, the older smuggler who appears in GTA 6 footage and lets Jason live in one of his properties. The voice sounds unmistakable, but Rockstar still has not attached Root’s name to Brian on its official site.

What did Stephen Root confirm?

Root directly confirmed that he appears in GTA 6. He said his character had already been shown during the game’s rollout and that people familiar with his work on King of the Hill recognized the voice. He also said he was happy to be involved and praised the way the game looks.

Rockstar has kept the performers behind Jason, Lucia, and the supporting cast out of its promotional material. A cast member speaking plainly is far more useful than another name pulled from an unofficial credit listing or a social-media rumor.

Is Stephen Root playing Brian Heder?

Everything points to Brian Heder, but the official credit is still missing. Root’s voice can be heard in footage featuring Brian, and viewers identified him long before the actor spoke publicly. Root’s comment about people recognizing his voice lines up with that same footage.

Rockstar describes Brian as an old-school drug runner operating from a boat yard in the Leonida Keys. He lets Jason stay at one of his properties without paying rent, as long as Jason helps with local shakedowns and occasionally visits Brian’s third wife, Lori, for sangria. That puts Brian close to Jason’s life before the larger story pulls Jason and Lucia across Leonida.

Why did fans recognize his voice?

Root has one of those voices that is difficult to disguise. He plays Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland on King of the Hill, Monroe Fuches on Barry, and Milton Waddams in Office Space. Even viewers who did not know his name recognized the rhythm and gravel in Brian’s delivery.

The actor acknowledged that problem himself. Once Rockstar let the character speak at length, keeping his involvement quiet became almost impossible.

What do we know about the rest of the GTA 6 cast?

Very little is official. Public credits have connected actors to Jason and Lucia, but Rockstar has not confirmed those names. Our GTA 6 actor-credit breakdown explains why those listings are useful leads rather than final proof.

The same rule applies to every other familiar-sounding voice. Root confirmed his own involvement. He did not identify anyone else, and Rockstar has not released a full cast list.

When does GTA 6 release?

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC launch date.

Root’s answer clears up one piece of the cast without settling the exact credit. If Rockstar names him as Brian, fans will have been right all along. If it does not, Root is playing someone the studio still has not introduced.
