The new Magic Knight Rayearth anime will run for two consecutive cours beginning October 7. A new trailer also previews the opening and ending songs and gives the three Magic Knights more time on screen.
Two consecutive cours normally means the broadcast continues for roughly six months without a full season break. The production has not announced an exact episode count, so a specific total would still be a guess.
The trailer previews both theme songs
Toaka performs the opening theme, “Otome no Ken,” which translates as “Sword of the Maiden.” The song is scheduled for release on October 14.
Yurina Kawaguchi performs the ending theme, “Hoshiakari.” Both tracks appear in the new trailer as Hikaru, Umi and Fuu begin to discover the powers they will use in Cephiro.
Ayane Sakura voices Hikaru Shidou, Rumi Okubo voices Umi Ryuuzaki and Rie Takahashi voices Fuu Hououji. Saori Hayami plays Princess Emeraude, while Yuki Ono voices Zagato.
The wider cast includes Mika Kikuchi as Mokona, Yuki Kaji as Clef, Emiri Kato as Presea, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Ferio, Mamiko Noto as Alcyone, Ayumu Murase as Ascot, Hitomi Ueda as Caldina and Hiroki Yasumoto as Lafarga.
The new series returns to the beginning
Magic Knight Rayearth follows three middle-school students who meet at Tokyo Tower and are suddenly summoned to Cephiro. Princess Emeraude calls them to save a world whose condition is tied to her own fate.
The girls arrive without knowing one another or understanding why they were chosen. Clef begins teaching them magic, Presea prepares their weapons and Mokona guides them as fire, water and wind become part of their new powers.
This is a new television adaptation of CLAMP’s manga, not a continuation of the 1994 anime. That gives the production room to introduce Hikaru, Umi and Fuu from the start for viewers who have never seen the earlier series.
Yui Miura directs the anime at E&H production. Shigeru Murakoshi handles series composition, Satomi Watanabe designs the characters, and Yuki Kajiura, Takumi Ozawa and Shiho Terada compose the music.
Premiere and streaming details
Magic Knight Rayearth premieres in Japan on Wednesday, October 7, at 11:45 p.m. in TV Asahi’s IMAnimation W block. Crunchyroll will stream the series as it airs.
The official announcement confirms the uninterrupted two-cour plan but does not list a finale date. Broadcast schedules can also shift, so the October premiere is the useful date for now.
The new trailer answers two major questions before launch: viewers will get more than one cour, and both theme artists are now official. The next update to watch for is the final episode count and any additional international language plans.
