Inherit the Winds will begin a two-week theatrical preview in Japan on November 13, 2026, before its television premiere in January 2027. The new trailer follows the young fighters of the Mibu Roshigumi as distrust grows around their leader, Kamo Serizawa.
The original Japanese title is Kaze wo Tsugu Mono. The story comes from playwright Yutaka Narui and the stage work first performed by Theater Group Caramel Box 30 years ago.
Jinsuke wakes up without his memories
The story begins in Kyoto in June 1863. A wounded fighter is carried into the Mibu Roshigumi headquarters with no memory of who he is. Sōji Okita tells him that his name is Jinsuke Tachikawa and helps him return to daily life inside the group.
The Mibu Roshigumi would later become the Shinsengumi. In the anime, Kyoto’s residents already fear the fighters as the “Wolves of Mibu.” They hunt supporters of the imperial cause, but trouble begins to spread inside their own ranks.
The trailer puts Serizawa at the center of that trouble. His harsh methods divide the men around him, forcing Jinsuke to decide what loyalty and justice mean when both sides claim to be right.
Takaya Kamikawa joins as a mysterious visitor
Takaya Kamikawa will make a special appearance as Shinbei Umeda, a mysterious man who says he is a samurai from the Iwakuni domain and keeps following Jinsuke.
Kamikawa also performed with Caramel Box, the company that first staged the story. “I’m truly happy that this memorable story is returning as animation — and that I can take part as an actor,” he said in a statement translated from Japanese.
The main cast includes Daisuke Sakuma as Jinsuke, Yuki Kaji as Sōji Okita, Aoi Yūki as Hyōgo Koganei, Koki Uchiyama as Toshizō Hijikata, Yuichi Nakamura as Isami Kondō and Yasuyuki Kase as Kamo Serizawa.
Live2D and traditional animation share the screen
Tomohiro Kawamura directs the series. Fumi Ebina designed the characters, and Yutaka Narui wrote the scripts. Live2D Creative Studio and Drive are producing the animation.
The production combines Live2D movement with traditional cel-style animation. Faces and clothing move with a stage-like rhythm, while fires, sword fights and the streets of Kyoto keep the scale cinematic.
Shigeru Kishida of Quruli is composing more than 50 pieces of music for the series. Quruli and Hitsujibungaku are also collaborating on both theme songs. The TV opening is called “Kaze wo Tsugu Mono,” while the theatrical preview theme and TV ending is “Namida no Kawa.”
The November screening is an early look, not the full television run. It covers Jinsuke’s arrival, his life with the Mibu Roshigumi and the conflict surrounding Serizawa. The complete anime begins broadcasting in Japan in January 2027.
