Fortnite is a free-to-play battle royale from Epic Games, and its newest season is asking players to stop treating every match like a fixed script. Chapter 7, Season 4: Override is live as of August 20, with a theme built around game icons, hacked loot, and match-wide modifiers. Epic lists November 1, 2026 as the Battle Pass end date, so this is a full season rather than a short event tucked between bigger updates. Epic’s launch post lays out the idea in one line: break the rules and change the game.
The mechanic is more than a slogan. An Override Console puts a contested decision in the middle of the match: one player picks a rule, and everyone else has to play around it. Players can fight for the console, leave it alone, or change their route when the chosen modifier appears.
Override Consoles Change the Match
Override Consoles appear in every match. The first player to reach one chooses from three modifiers, and that choice rewrites the rules for the entire server. Epic says the player’s name appears around the console base, making it clear who is in control. That turns the interaction into more than a quiet menu choice: everyone can see the contest, and everyone has a reason to decide whether to interrupt it.
There are also rarer Squad Overrides. Those affect only the squad that captures them, but the team’s location is broadcast on the map. In practice, the season has two versions of the same risk. A standard Override can change the whole lobby, while a Squad Override can make one team stronger and immediately tell everyone where to find them.

The island is a video-game crossover, not just a skin bundle
Override’s biggest visual change is Green Hill Zone, the Sonic the Hedgehog location shown in the season’s official material. Sonic’s Power Sneakers are part of the launch gameplay, and Epic also lists a Tetris Rift among the season’s new ways to move through the island. The identifies Green Hill Zone as one of the major locations on the revised island, although named locations and balance can change with updates.
