Fate/Extra Record finally has a release date. The full remake of the 2010 PSP RPG launches worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027, and a new trailer shows how much has changed since the original.
The game is set in the Moon Holy Grail War, a digital tournament where Masters and legendary Servants fight for a wish. That premise is familiar to Fate fans, but the remake is rebuilding the adventure with expanded story material, redesigned characters, and a new card-based battle system.
What is Fate/Extra Record?
Fate/Extra Record revisits the first RPG in the Fate series. The original Fate/Extra released on PSP in 2010, before the franchise spread through anime, manga, novels, and mobile games. This version is not a simple port: Type-Moon has expanded the narrative, refreshed the character designs, and rebuilt the presentation for modern consoles.
The story begins after humanity discovers the Moon Cell Automaton, a supercomputer capable of granting wishes. Its digital world, SE.RA.PH, becomes the arena for 128 Masters and their Servants. The player takes the role of Hakuno Kishinami, who has no memory of how they entered the tournament and must find a Servant before the battles begin.
How does the new battle system work?
The remake replaces the original combat with customizable Command Card decks. Attack cards deal damage, Guard cards reduce incoming hits, and Skill cards add their own effects. You build a hand for each encounter, read the enemy’s habits, and choose a sequence that gives your Servant the best chance of surviving.
New Commands can be found in treasure boxes and earned by defeating powerful enemies. The three available Servants also have different strengths and combat styles, so the choice at the start is not only a story decision. It changes how you approach the Moon Holy Grail War.
What is the Moon Holy Grail War?
Unlike the city-based conflicts in some Fate stories, Fate/Extra Record’s tournament takes place inside a simulated world built by the Moon Cell. Masters explore sections of the Arena, gather information about rival Servants, and prepare for one-on-one decisive battles. Learning an opponent’s true identity can reveal the weakness tied to their combat style.
The stakes are deliberately harsh. A losing Master does not simply leave the bracket; the official description says the defeat costs them their life. That gives the remake’s exploration and relationship scenes a reason to exist beside the fights. Hakuno is trying to understand the war while also finding a way to stay in it.
When does Fate/Extra Record release?
Fate/Extra Record launches worldwide on January 28, 2027, for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The standard release is joined by a Digital Deluxe Edition with cosmetic costumes, an arranged music pack based on the original game, and digital versions of the art book and soundtrack included with the physical Limited Edition.
