The free Final Fantasy Resonance demo is live on PS5, and it includes the game’s entire first chapter instead of a short combat sample. Square Enix is also letting players carry their demo save into the full release on October 22, 2026. A new trailer adds another reason to pay attention: Sephiroth is waiting somewhere in the game.

Final Fantasy Resonance is Square Enix’s HD-2D RPG built around Rain, Fina, Lasswell, crystals, and Visions of heroes from across the series. The demo gives players a proper start with the story and battle systems, so it is a useful preview for anyone still deciding whether this new take on classic Final Fantasy is for them.

What is in the Final Fantasy Resonance demo?

The demo covers the entire opening chapter and is available as a free download on PS5. It includes the opening story, exploration, and the evolved turn-based command battles. You can play through the introduction without worrying that the progress will be thrown away: save data transfers to the full game when it launches.

That makes the demo more practical than a one-room preview. You can learn how Rain’s party works, see how the game handles its first conflicts, and decide whether the HD-2D look works for you before buying. The PlayStation Store listing also highlights the larger game’s party-building, equipment, and side-content systems, giving a clearer picture of what the opening is leading toward.

Why is Sephiroth in Final Fantasy Resonance?

The State of Play trailer confirms that Sephiroth appears in Final Fantasy Resonance and can be found and challenged for a special reward. He is being presented as an optional encounter rather than a new version of the main villain Veritas of the Dark.

The announcement does not say that the Sephiroth fight is part of the free demo, so it is safer to treat him as a full-game hook for now. His inclusion still fits the Visions idea: Final Fantasy Resonance is built to bring familiar faces into a new world without turning the story into a remake of one older game.

How does the combat work?

Battles use a timeline that shows when allies and enemies will act. The stagger gauge under an enemy’s health bar can interrupt that order and lower the target’s defense, so choosing when to attack is as important as choosing the move itself.

Visions add another layer to the party. They are crystallized memories of characters you meet, and they can teach abilities that remain usable after you switch to a different Vision. The game also has Resonance special moves and espers, which fight beside the party for a limited number of turns. Those systems give the demo more to show than a simple return to old-school menus.

When does Final Fantasy Resonance release?

Final Fantasy Resonance launches on PlayStation 5 on October 22, 2026. The demo is available now on PS5, and its save data carries forward to the full game. Square Enix’s official site has more background on the crystal conflict and the main cast.
