Mistfall Hunter can feel hostile before the first real hunt even begins. The camp is crowded with systems, every class has two weapon styles, and one bad fight can erase a bag full of loot. The best way to learn is to keep the first few runs simple: use an easy class, take cheap equipment, practice free-aim combat, and leave as soon as the run has paid for itself.
This Mistfall Hunter beginner guide explains that full loop, from choosing a class to finding a Returner Woodling and escaping with a Soul of Return.
Mistfall Hunter beginner checklist
- Start with Mercenary if you want the safest introduction to melee combat.
- Enter Hallowgrove with a low-cost loadout you can afford to lose.
- Learn your dodge, Energy use, Breakaway, heal, map, and portal controls before chasing players.
- Loot nearby monsters and containers, but keep checking the Gyldenmist on the map.
- Use a Returning Chime, follow the bell and visual signal, and defeat the Woodling.
- Summon an Extraction Point near the Soul Tree, then interact with it to escape.
- Move extracted equipment into the Warehouse before preparing the next run.
Your first victory is not defeating the strongest monster or another squad. It is completing one clean extraction and understanding why it worked.
What kind of game is Mistfall Hunter?
Mistfall Hunter is a third-person PvPvE extraction action RPG. You enter a dangerous map, fight monsters and rival Gyldhunters, collect gear and Gyldenblod, then try to escape before the spreading Gyldenmist or another player ends the run.
The combat has a Soulslike rhythm, but this is not a traditional campaign RPG. The loot you carry is at risk. According to the official PlayStation description, death strips you of the spoils collected during the hunt. Extract successfully and those items return to camp with you.
The game supports solo play and squads of up to three players. A match can include up to 15 players, so even a quiet room can turn dangerous without warning. If you already understand extraction games, our ARC Raiders Anvil Blueprint guide shows the same basic risk-versus-reward idea in a very different setting.
Best first class in Mistfall Hunter
Mercenary is the easiest first class for most beginners. Sword and Shield gives you a defensive option while you learn enemy attacks, and the Hammer offers heavier damage when you feel more confident. The class is flexible, readable, and less punishing than a low-health ranged character or a specialist that depends on precise setup.
Mercenary is not automatically the strongest class in every fight. Sorcerer has excellent damage and crowd control, Shadowstrix can burst targets from stealth, and Blackarrow can pressure enemies from range. Those classes ask more from your positioning, aim, or cooldown management. Mercenary gives you room to learn the map and extraction rules at the same time as the combat.
Which class fits your playstyle?
- Mercenary: Best first pick for players who want straightforward melee, defense, and forgiving weapon choices.
- Sorcerer: Strong ranged magic and crowd control, but poor positioning can be punished quickly.
- Blackarrow: Long-range pressure and special arrows. It is powerful when your free aim is accurate, but missed shots are expensive.
- Shadowstrix: Stealth, mobility, and burst damage. A good PvP class once you understand spacing and escape routes.
- Seer: Reverent supports a team with healing and protection, while Blasphemer turns the class into a mace-wielding magic fighter. The support path is harder to recommend for a first solo run.
- Withered Knight: Heavy melee pressure with Greatsword or Polearm and Shield. Timing, positioning, and mark management make it less immediate than Mercenary.
Do not treat a launch-week tier list as a permanent rule. The July 30 launch update already adjusted Withered Knight skills, damage, Energy costs, and blocking. Pick a class whose basic rhythm makes sense to you, then learn one weapon style before spreading resources across the whole roster.
What to do before your first run
Visit the Training Grounds
Use the Training Grounds before risking equipment. It is a safe place to summon practice targets, test skills, learn attack ranges, and understand how quickly your character spends Energy. Try both weapon styles and confirm the controls for dodge, heal, swap weapon, map, interact, and Summon Portal.
Mistfall Hunter uses free aim instead of a traditional lock-on system. Melee attacks can miss beside a target if the camera and character are not lined up. Spend a few minutes practicing small camera corrections rather than swinging through a full combo every time.
Check your inventory and Warehouse
Items left in the Warehouse do not travel into the next adventure. Equipment in your active inventory can be lost if the run fails, so move anything valuable into storage before matchmaking.
For an early learning run, use a basic kit instead of your best drop. A cheap weapon, armor you can replace, Healing Elixirs, and the available Springhorn charges are enough to practice the loop. The goal is to learn without turning every mistake into a major setback.
Learn one simple loadout
Equip skills you can explain in one sentence. One reliable damage skill, one defensive or movement tool, and a clear plan for your second weapon are better than a complicated combo you forget during an ambush.
Leveling unlocks more skills and talents, but more options do not help if the basics are still unfamiliar. Use early upgrades to strengthen the actions you already perform instead of rebuilding the class after every item drop.
A safe plan for your first Hallowgrove run

Hallowgrove is the opening area and the best place to learn the full hunt. Follow this simple route:
- Choose a small objective. Complete one nearby task, collect a manageable amount of loot, or simply practice extraction.
- Fight ordinary monsters first. Learn attack timing and healing without immediately challenging an Underlord or another player.
- Loot quickly. Standing still in an inventory menu makes you an easy target.
- Keep an exit route. Avoid dropping into an area if you do not know how to climb or run back out.
- Check the map regularly. Move before the Gyldenmist forces every remaining player toward the same safe ground.
- Start extraction early. A Returner Woodling and the portal process take time, and the noise can attract rivals.
If the bag already contains something you would be upset to lose, the hunt has done its job. Leave. Greed is one of the fastest ways to turn a useful run into nothing.
Mistfall Hunter combat tips for beginners
Aim before committing to a combo
There is no standard enemy lock-on, so watch the center of your screen and make small camera adjustments between attacks. A short, accurate sequence is safer than continuing a combo after the target has moved away.
Protect your Energy
Dodge and several class actions use Energy. Empty the bar and your character becomes Exhausted, temporarily blocking other Energy-based actions. Keep enough in reserve for one defensive response, especially when fighting a player who can punish a long recovery.
Use Breakaway when staggered
After taking multiple impact attacks in quick succession, the Breakaway prompt can appear. Press dodge to escape the stagger. Breakaway has its own cooldown and does not use normal dodge Energy, so it can rescue you from a combo that would otherwise continue.
Aim for weak points when the opening is safe
The head is a weak point for most monsters and Gyldhunters. Weak-point hits can improve damage and impact, but chasing a perfect angle is not worth taking a full counterattack. Secure the hit only when the enemy is committed, staggered, or focused on a teammate.
Heal before the emergency
Healing Elixirs restore health when you have space to use them. The Springhorn is faster and limited per match, so save it for moments when normal healing would be unsafe. Find cover, break line of sight, and heal before one mistake becomes fatal.
Respect red challenge zones
Red areas on the map mark strong Underlords. Starting that fight creates a barrier around the challenge zone. You can interact with the barrier to leave, but a new player is usually better off learning normal enemies, looting, and extraction before committing to a boss.
For another modern action RPG that rewards learning defensive systems before forcing damage, see our Beast of Reincarnation beginner guide.
How to extract in Mistfall Hunter
Extraction works differently depending on the area, but Hallowgrove teaches the clearest version of the system.
1. Find and activate a Returning Chime
Open the map and locate a Returning Chime. Interact with it to begin the process. After a delay, a Hallowgrove Woodling appears at a random nearby location. The Chime has a cooldown, so do not start it and assume you can immediately try again.
2. Follow the bell and visual signal
Listen for the Woodling's chime and watch for the special visual marker. These clues can be detected through nearby terrain and help you track the creature after it spawns. Move quickly because the Woodling can flee and the Gyldenmist continues to spread.
3. Defeat the Woodling
Clear nearby enemies before committing if possible. The Woodling fight itself is only part of the danger: another player can hear the extraction activity and attack while your attention is elsewhere.
When the Hallowgrove Woodling dies, it becomes a Soul Tree. In Brandrgarde, periodically appearing Returner Woodlings drop the Soul of Return needed for escape.
4. Summon the Extraction Point
Stand near the Soul Tree and use your Summon Portal control. This consumes the available Soul of Return and creates an Extraction Point. Interact with the point to leave and bring back the items you are carrying.
The Soul Tree and extraction opportunity do not last forever. Do not sort every new item beside the exit. Secure the area, summon the portal, and leave.
5. Expect other players
Extraction is visible and noisy. A launch-week GamesRadar hands-on report also found that an escape point could be used once before entering a cooldown, which can turn a peaceful meeting into a fight over the exit. Approach with full health, keep your defensive skill ready, and check nearby cover before ringing out.
