World of Warcraft: Forever is not replacing WoW Classic, but its beta has already started a big argument about how Azeroth should look. Players are posting the same places and character models side by side. Some say Forever finally matches the WoW they remember. Others think the cleaner image removes part of Classic’s atmosphere.

The difference between the games is important. WoW Classic keeps older versions of World of Warcraft available. Forever starts with the original level 1–60 world, then gives Blizzard room to add new stories, regions and features. Blizzard calls it a third World of Warcraft experience beside Modern and Classic, not a new Classic season.

Classic and Forever in one clear comparison

The easiest way to understand the debate is to look at the same landscape in both games. The road, settlement and hills are in the same places, but the color and visibility change the feeling of the scene.

Classic is on top and Forever is below. Classic uses a strong orange sunset and turns the distant mountains into dark shapes. Forever reveals more of the terrain, makes the grass greener and covers the distance with lighter fog.

The separate screenshots below make those differences easier to inspect at full size.

Classic hides much of the horizon. That older fog can make the world feel larger because players cannot see every mountain and valley at once. The warm colors also give the area a stronger fantasy mood.

Forever shows more of the geography and adds detail across the whole scene. It looks cleaner and more complete, but more detail is not automatically better for every Classic fan.

The mountains show what Forever changes

The biggest change is not a new object or a redesigned building. It is how far the player can see. This closer comparison removes most of the foreground and puts the distant mountains and fog next to each other.

In the Classic image, the mountains are almost flat silhouettes. In the Forever image, separate peaks and layers are visible. Fans who prefer Forever see a world with more depth. Fans who prefer Classic say the hidden distance adds mystery and makes Azeroth feel less ordinary.

The ground also has a different mood

The second close comparison focuses on the grass, road and lower part of the scene. It shows that the update is not only about a longer view distance.

Classic uses warmer yellow-brown grass and a softer road. Forever uses greener grass, clearer textures and brighter lighting. That small color change affects the whole picture: Classic feels like a painted fantasy sunset, while Forever feels like a sharper modern game.

One fan said Forever matches the WoW in their memory

The positive reaction is easy to understand. Old games often look better in memory than they do when opened years later. One fan said Forever now looks as good as the original game looked in their head.

That comment explains the appeal of the update. Forever keeps familiar roads, buildings and character shapes, then adds modern lighting, water and distant scenery. For that player, the new image does not ruin Classic. It brings an old memory closer to what appears on a modern screen.

Another fan still prefers Classic’s colors

The criticism is not simply that new graphics are bad. Another player said the update looked nice but needed more work on its colors. They preferred the older palette because it made the world feel more otherworldly.

Other replies argued about the fog. Some thought Forever’s pale haze looked too strong. Others said Classic used fog better because it hid distant areas instead of washing them in light. The argument is really about detail versus atmosphere.

Night elves show the SD and HD choice

Forever lets players choose standard-definition or high-definition character models. Blizzard has also restored Classic-style animations, so the newer models can move more like the older characters.

One player placed the same female night elf face in Classic, Forever SD and Forever HD. The three labels make the changes easy to follow.

Forever SD stays closer to the old proportions, while Forever HD changes the face, hair and expression more clearly. The player who made this comparison preferred SD for night elves but said HD worked better for gnomes.

The dwarf comparison makes the HD change obvious

The difference becomes even clearer with this dwarf. Both sides come from Forever, so this is a direct look at the SD and HD options inside the new game.

The SD dwarf keeps the blockier face and simpler body that longtime players recognize. The HD dwarf has more detail, a different beard and a more expressive face. Neither setting is hidden behind a mod: players can choose the look they prefer.

Forever SD is not exactly the same as Classic Era

A third player compared a human in Forever with HD models turned off against the same type of character in Classic Era. The labels show Forever SD on the left and Classic Era on the right.

The images are similar, but the face, hair, shoulders and body shape do not match perfectly. The player used the comparison to argue that turning HD off does not simply restore the exact Classic Era model. It is an important detail for fans who hoped SD would look identical to Classic.

Forever still wants a slower Classic journey

The graphics are only one part of the comparison. Blizzard says Forever keeps major Classic rules, including no flying, no level scaling and a level cap of 60. A separate beta discussion also warned that leveling is closer to Classic Era than to modern WoW, so the trip to level 60 is still meant to take time.

Campfire buffs, Legacy perks and more quests may make that journey feel faster in practice. Early Reddit reactions are mixed. One beta player thought combat and gearing felt easier than expected. Another enjoyed the familiar world but wanted Blizzard to be clearer about where Classic ends and modern convenience begins.

Forever also adds more than 1,000 quests, nine dungeons, two raids, new regions, the Skyborne race, transmog and controller support. It uses Classic as a foundation, but it is not trying to freeze the game in 2004.

Which version is for you?

WoW Classic remains the better fit for players who want an older version preserved with its familiar look and known content. Forever is for players who like that foundation but want Blizzard to keep building on it.

The images show the tradeoff. Classic has stronger colors, darker silhouettes and the comfort of a world players already know. Forever has more detail, more options and new places to discover, but every modern change risks touching something fans considered part of Classic’s identity.

World of Warcraft: Forever launches November 4, 2026. Its beta runs through October 21, giving Blizzard time to adjust the presentation and balance. The screenshots already show the challenge: making Azeroth look newer without losing the feeling that made players want to return.
