Minecraft is coming to Switch 2 with Vibrant Visuals. Here is what Mojang confirmed, what remains unknown, and how worlds and purchases may transfer.

Minecraft is getting a native Nintendo Switch 2 version later in 2026, with Vibrant Visuals enabled by default. Mojang has confirmed the game and its biggest graphics upgrade, but it has not announced an exact release date, price, physical edition, or whether current Switch owners will receive a free upgrade.
The safest answer for anyone who already owns Minecraft on Switch is simple: do not buy another copy yet. The native version is still listed as coming later this year, and the store details that would explain the upgrade path have not appeared.
This is a separate native release built for Switch 2 hardware, not just the current Switch version running through backward compatibility. It remains part of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, so the familiar cross-platform ecosystem is expected to remain central.

What Vibrant Visuals changes on Switch 2
Vibrant Visuals is the new graphics mode for Bedrock Edition. It changes how light behaves across the world instead of replacing Minecraft’s blocky art style. Sunlight reflects on water, shadows move as the day changes, fog gives distant areas more depth, and light reaches caves and underwater spaces in a more natural way.
Mojang says the mode will be active by default in the native Switch 2 version. The announcement does not promise a specific resolution or frame rate. It also does not say whether players will be able to choose between a sharper image and a faster performance preset on Switch 2.
That distinction is important. “Optimized for Switch 2” confirms a native version that can use the stronger hardware. It does not automatically mean 4K, 60 frames per second, ray tracing, or faster loading in every situation. Those numbers need to come from Mojang, Nintendo, or final testing.
Will the Minecraft Switch 2 upgrade be free?
Mojang has not said whether the upgrade will be free or paid. Nintendo uses paid upgrade packs for some Switch 2 Edition games and offers free improvements for others. Minecraft’s announcement does not call the new version an “Upgrade Pack,” list a price, or explain what current owners receive.
The older 2017 Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition once had a free path to the newer 2018 Bedrock release. That historical offer is not proof that the 2026 Switch 2 version will work the same way. A new store listing or support page is needed before anyone can treat a free upgrade as confirmed.
Physical Switch owners should also wait for clarification. Some Switch 2 upgrades use the original cartridge as a license while downloading new data, but Mojang has not described that process for Minecraft.

Will worlds and Marketplace purchases transfer?
Microsoft accounts already provide cross-platform access to Minecraft subscriptions, Marketplace purchases, Realms, multiplayer, and social features on Bedrock-supported devices. Players should use the same Microsoft account on Switch 2 that they use on the current Switch.
A locally saved single-player world is a different question. Mojang has not published Switch-to-Switch-2 transfer instructions for the native version. Nintendo’s system transfer may handle local data, but that exact path should not be promised until the support page is live.
Minecraft Realms offers an official fallback for important Bedrock worlds. A player can upload a local world to a Realm on the old device, sign into the same Microsoft account on the destination device, and download the world there. Realms requires an active trial or paid subscription, so it is useful as a transfer method but should not be described as a free feature.

What happens to the Super Mario Mash-Up?
The Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up is being updated for the native version. Mojang specifically showed its Mario-inspired textures, music, skins, Peach’s Castle, and Delfino Plaza with the richer lighting from Vibrant Visuals.
The announcement describes an update to the existing Mash-Up, not a separate paid sequel. Mojang has not said whether every old Nintendo pack will receive the same treatment.
Switch 2 version versus the current Switch game
The current Switch version remains playable on Switch 2 through backward compatibility. The native version is designed specifically for the newer console and is the one that will include Vibrant Visuals by default.
Until the native version launches, moving to Switch 2 does not automatically unlock the announced graphics. Players can continue a normal Bedrock experience, use their Microsoft account, join compatible multiplayer sessions, and access their account-based content while waiting for the dedicated build.
