Minecraft: Java Edition now recommends 16 GB of system RAM for a 1080p, 60 FPS experience using the Fancy graphics preset. Mojang has also raised the minimum target to 8 GB with a dedicated graphics card or 12 GB with integrated graphics.

That sounds like a huge jump for a block-building game that has run on modest computers for years. The good news is that Minecraft has not suddenly locked out every player with an older PC. Mojang says below-spec systems should still launch Java Edition today, although performance and visual quality are no longer guaranteed.

The new Minecraft Java requirements

Mojang's new minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings. The main requirements are:

  • A 64-bit operating system
  • 8 GB of RAM with a dedicated GPU, or 12 GB with integrated graphics
  • A four-core processor
  • A Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB of VRAM

The recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings. It calls for 16 GB of RAM, a stronger modern processor, and a Vulkan 1.3-capable graphics card with 6 GB of VRAM.

These numbers describe the whole computer, not memory that should all be assigned directly to Minecraft. Windows, macOS, Linux, launchers, voice chat, browsers, and background apps also need room to run.

Do you need 16 GB of RAM to keep playing?

Not necessarily. If Java Edition already runs well on your computer, Mojang says you may not notice an immediate change. The updated list is a clearer performance target, not a switch that blocks everyone below it.

The important difference is between minimum, recommended, and currently supported in practice. A computer below the new minimum may still open the game, but low frame rates, long loading times, visual problems, or future launch failures are more likely. A machine between the minimum and recommended targets may run well after a few settings are lowered.

Players should not rush to buy new parts only because a requirements page changed. Test the current game on the worlds and servers you actually use. A small survival world without shaders has very different demands from a heavily modded installation with a large render distance.

Why Mojang changed the requirements

The previous requirements were based on much older processors and graphics technology. Minecraft: Java Edition is more than 17 years old, and its worlds, rendering systems, features, and visual ambitions have continued to grow.

Mojang is also moving Java Edition away from OpenGL and toward Vulkan, a modern graphics API. The studio has been rebuilding parts of the renderer so graphics work can run on a separate thread instead of competing with the main game logic. That work supports future improvements such as Vibrant Visuals while giving the development team a more modern technical base.

The requirement change is partly about setting expectations before that transition goes further. A computer that launches Minecraft today may not deliver the same experience after more of the new rendering work arrives.

How to check whether your PC is ready

On Windows, open Settings, choose System, and select About to see the processor and installed RAM. Open Task Manager and use the Performance tab to check the GPU model and whether it has dedicated memory.

For Vulkan support, the GPU model matters more than the amount of RAM alone. Search the manufacturer's specifications for your exact graphics card or integrated GPU, then install a current driver from Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Apple, or the computer manufacturer.

You should also check whether the operating system is still supported. Mojang's new target expects a modern 64-bit version of Windows, macOS, or Linux. An old graphics card with unsupported drivers can cause more trouble than a slightly slower modern processor.

Settings to lower before buying new hardware

Start with the options that have the clearest performance cost:

  • Change Graphics from Fancy to Fast
  • Lower Render Distance and Simulation Distance
  • Reduce particles, clouds, and entity distance
  • Close browser tabs, recording software, and unused launchers
  • Test without shaders or large texture packs
  • Update the graphics driver and Java launcher

Do not assign all available system memory to Minecraft. The operating system and background apps need their share. Giving the Java process an excessive heap can also create long cleanup pauses instead of fixing the real bottleneck.

If you use many mods, test a clean profile before blaming the base game. One outdated mod, shader, or resource pack can create stutters that a RAM upgrade will not solve.

Java or Bedrock may be the bigger choice

Players on a low-spec Windows computer can also compare Java Edition with Bedrock Edition. Bedrock has different requirements and does not support the same Java mod ecosystem, but it includes cross-play with consoles and mobile devices.

The simple answer is this: 16 GB is the new recommended system target, not an immediate hard lock. Check how your own game runs, lower the expensive settings first, and upgrade only when your normal Minecraft experience shows that the current hardware is holding you back.
