Marvel’s Wolverine was supposed to spend launch week showing off its claws. Instead, one day after the PlayStation 5 release, Insomniac’s new game is caught in a fight over whether players are controlling Logan—or simply watching him tear through a heavily guided adventure.

The complaints are spreading across X, Reddit and Threads. Viral clips accuse the game of “playing itself,” completed-player reviews attack the combat and camera, and the $69.99 price has become part of the argument. Just as loudly, other fans say the pile-on is ignoring the story, the spectacle and the fact that plenty of people are having fun.

The clip that set the backlash on fire

The line that stuck came from Michael Does Life. In a blunt X post, the creator called Marvel’s Wolverine terrible, said it “plays itself” and told followers not to buy it. The post raced around the platform because it turned a messy launch-week debate into one brutal sentence.

What bothered viewers was the amount of action happening with little visible input. Scripted movement, cinematic takedowns and guided traversal can look impressive, but they can also make a player feel like a passenger. That is a dangerous impression for a Wolverine game built around the fantasy of becoming Logan.

One clip cannot describe an entire campaign, but it did not need to. It gave frustrated players a slogan, and “it plays itself” quickly became the phrase attached to almost every other complaint.

Even the hardest difficulty got dragged into it

The backlash grew when ChicoFilo shared a moment from the hardest difficulty and called it ridiculous. The interesting part is that the same post also says the game has been fun. This was not someone dismissing the whole release; it was a player enjoying it and still wondering why a hard-mode sequence felt so guided.

That is why the clip annoyed so many players. The game is on its hardest setting, but it still seems to take control during a big moment. For some fans, that makes “hard mode” feel pointless.

It also shows why this story is bigger than a handful of people trying to destroy the game online. Some of the criticism is coming from fans who like Marvel’s Wolverine and want parts of it to feel less automatic.

Players are angry about the blue line that tells them where to go

Another complaint is about a bright blue trail that shows Logan where to go. LOCON GAMER said players cannot turn it off and compared it with earlier footage that did not show the line.

Insomniac has not confirmed whether the trail can be disabled, so that detail is still unclear. But the complaint itself is simple: some players do not want the game pointing out every step.

The trail may help people who want more guidance. The problem is choice. Critics want an option to remove it and explore on their own.

On Reddit, the criticism gets much harsher

The sharpest Reddit reactions come from players who say they finished the campaign. One r/PlayWolverine writer gave it a 4/10 and attacked the repetitive combat, weak impact and softer version of Logan. Some replies questioned the timing of that playthrough, but the thread exploded.

Another commenter in the same thread said they also finished the game. They called it underwhelming and less mechanically rich than X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but said they still had some fun. That mix of frustration and enjoyment shows why the reaction is not simply love or hate.

A separate r/PlayWolverine review landed at 5/10. That player liked the story but said the fighting lacked weight, enemy variety and room for creative combos.

The r/PS5 discussion kept returning to that problem. Some users called the game a basic brawler; others compared it to an interactive movie. Fans pushed back by praising the pacing and spectacle, but combat depth has clearly become one of the release’s biggest dividing lines.

$70 is part of the anger

Marvel’s Wolverine costs $69.99 in the United States, and that price hangs over nearly every negative review. Players who see the campaign as short, linear or repetitive are not only saying they dislike the design—they are asking whether the package earns a full-price tag.

A linear game does not need an open world to justify its price. It does need enough variety, polish and replay value to make the focused structure feel intentional. For critics, that is where Wolverine falls short. For fans, the story, production and chance to play as Logan are exactly what they paid for.

The argument will not be settled by one completion time. Players move through missions at different speeds, and the game includes optional content. Still, the price has turned every complaint about repetition into a much louder one.

The camera is drawing fire too

Not every complaint is philosophical. Players in the r/PS5 and r/InsomniacGames threads also describe a clunky camera and frustrating lock-on behavior when several enemies crowd the screen.

Those problems are easier for Insomniac to address than an argument about the entire campaign. Camera tuning, target selection and small bugs can all change in an update. Several fans already say their experience has been smooth, but the complaints are common enough to make early patch notes worth watching.

Some fans wanted a more savage Wolverine

The backlash is also about the character himself. One of the harshest Reddit reviews described this Logan as too sanitized, arguing that the story and combat stop short of the dangerous, unpredictable Wolverine some fans expected.

Others are thrilled simply to wear the costumes, slash through enemies and watch Insomniac stage a polished Marvel story. That split will be harder to patch. Camera behavior can change; the game’s version of Logan is already at the center of its story.

Threads is pushing back on the pile-on

The conversation on Threads is noticeably less apocalyptic. One player said Wolverine is not bad and is fun so far, but does not feel like a blockbuster. That is disappointment, not a declaration that the game is a disaster.

Another Threads user argued that early concerns about repetitive gameplay and the lack of an open world were gradually turned into claims that the whole game was a failure. That player praised the graphics, cinematics, costumes and the fun of fighting as Wolverine.

Positive comments also appear throughout the Reddit discussions. Players are defending the story, the presentation and the combat spectacle. The backlash is real, but so is the backlash to the backlash.

Insomniac knows players are talking

Before launch, Insomniac community director James Stevenson said the studio had been listening and that the team was already working in response to feedback. He did not promise a specific patch or name any feature that would change.

That means there is no confirmation yet that the blue trail will become optional, the combat will be rebalanced or the camera will be adjusted. But the studio is clearly aware of the conversation, and the first updates will show which complaints it considers fixable.

What happens next

Marvel’s Wolverine has become one of those releases where the game and the online argument around it are almost impossible to separate. A few viral clips opened the fight; full-player reviews made it harsher; fans defending the experience kept it from becoming a one-sided story.

Now the focus turns to Insomniac. Patch notes can answer the camera and guidance complaints. The harder arguments—combat depth, value and whether this Logan feels wild enough—will follow the game long after launch week.
