Dragon's Dogma 2 now has three practical travel layers: the reusable Eternal Ferrystone for teleporting to Portcrystals, ordinary Ferrystones as consumable backups, and expanded Oxcart routes with stopovers. Title Update 3.1, released in June 2026, added the Eternal Ferrystone, new fixed Portcrystals, and several Oxcart improvements, so launch-era travel guides are no longer complete.

The fastest setup is to claim the Eternal Ferrystone during the early Vernworth story, activate every fixed Portcrystal encountered, and reserve portable Portcrystals for useful destinations that still lack one.

How to get the Eternal Ferrystone

Progress the Vernworth story until speaking with Captain Brant during Seat of the Sovran. The Eternal Ferrystone is awarded automatically after that conversation. If the quest was already complete when Title Update 3.1 was installed, the item is placed in the inventory.

Unlike an ordinary Ferrystone, the Eternal Ferrystone is not consumed. It can repeatedly teleport the party to an available Portcrystal. Keep it on the Arisen rather than storage so an expedition always has a return option.

Current versions also allow a Ferrystone to be used from the map by moving the cursor to a Portcrystal. If the command is unavailable, check that the destination is active, the Arisen is outdoors with enough open space, the party is not in a restricted story state, and the stone is actually in the Arisen's inventory.

Ferrystones and Portcrystals do different jobs

A Ferrystone initiates teleportation. A Portcrystal is the destination. Owning several stones does not create a destination, and carrying a portable Portcrystal does not teleport the party until it has been placed and a usable stone is available.

Ordinary Ferrystones are consumed after use. They remain useful if the Eternal Ferrystone has not been claimed, is in storage, or becomes temporarily unavailable during a special sequence. They can be found as loot and rewards or purchased from certain merchants. Casual mode lowers their shop price, but the reusable stone makes stockpiling far less important than it was at launch.

Portable Portcrystals can be placed in the world and picked up again. They are route-planning tools, not permanent commitments. Move one when a quest line ends or when a newly added fixed destination makes the old placement redundant.

Current fixed Portcrystals in the normal world

The base game originally relied on very few permanent destinations. Updates have expanded that network. In the normal world, fixed Portcrystals are available at these major settlements after reaching or activating them:

  • Vernworth
  • Harve Village
  • Bakbattahl
  • Melve
  • Checkpoint Rest Town
  • Volcanic Island Camp

Bakbattahl was added in an earlier update. Title Update 3.1 added Melve, Checkpoint Rest Town, and Volcanic Island Camp. The update also added a portable Portcrystal as a reward for Monster Culling; players who had already completed that quest received the reward automatically.

Story progression can change which locations are reachable, especially late in the game. Do not assume every normal-world destination remains available during a major world-state transition.

Best places for portable Portcrystals after the 2026 update

The expanded fixed network frees portable Portcrystals for locations chosen around the current objective. Good placements solve repeated travel rather than merely filling visual gaps on the map.

Sacred Arbor

Sacred Arbor has unique vendors, quest lines, and Elven characters but no ordinary Oxcart connection. It is one of the strongest long-term placements if the party expects to return for equipment, upgrades, or quests.

Bay Wayside Shrine

The Dragonforged operates at Bay Wayside Shrine, northeast of Bakbattahl. A nearby Portcrystal shortens repeated visits for Wyrmslife Crystal exchanges and late-game enhancement work.

Windwalker's Home or another Volcanic Island objective

Volcanic Island Camp now has a fixed destination, so a portable crystal at the camp itself is usually redundant. Place one nearer Windwalker's Home, a recurring quest location, or another southern route only while those trips remain active.

The Sphinx's current area

The Sphinx moves after the first set of riddles. A portable crystal can make repeated attempts safer, but retrieve or relocate it when that stage ends. Do not leave a scarce crystal beside an objective that no longer exists.

A personal farming or upgrade route

Materials, monster badges, and smithing services can justify temporary placements. The right destination is the one the current build revisits. A generic list cannot know whether the party needs Medusa, a maister, a rare ore route, or an equipment vendor more often.

How Oxcarts work now

Oxcarts travel along fixed routes for a small fare. Speak with the driver or attendant, board, and use Doze Off to advance the journey. Time passes during the ride, and an ambush may interrupt it.

Title Update 3.1 made Doze Off available sooner, extended departure hours from morning through evening, and added a mini-map icon when an Oxcart is nearby. It also introduced Oxcart Stopovers, which let the Arisen leave at supported intermediate points instead of treating every ride as an all-or-nothing trip between terminals.

An Oxcart is still a physical object. Enemies can attack it, and the party can destroy it with careless area damage. Pull large monsters away from the cart, avoid explosive attacks beside it, and protect the ox and driver before chasing enemies down the road.

Major Oxcart connections

Vernworth has separate stations serving different directions. The western route reaches Checkpoint Rest Town, while the northern route connects toward Melve. Check the sign and destination before paying; two carts in the same city are not interchangeable.

From Checkpoint Rest Town, a cart travels toward Bakbattahl once the border and route conditions permit it. Bakbattahl connects onward toward the Volcanic Island region through its own service. Stopovers make these routes more useful for objectives located between the major terminals.

If a cart is absent, wait until its operating period rather than assuming the route is unavailable. The 2026 update broadened departure hours, but services still follow time and story conditions.

When to walk instead of teleporting

Walking is not wasted time when the route contains unexplored caves, Seeker's Tokens, materials, Pawn knowledge, monster badges, or quests triggered on the road. Teleport when the goal is a known destination; walk when the route itself has unresolved value.

A strong pattern is to walk outward and teleport home. The party explores with empty inventory, completes several objectives, then uses the Eternal Ferrystone after weight, loss gauge, or darkness makes the return less productive.

Reverse the pattern for timed quests. Teleport close to the objective first, complete the deadline-sensitive work, and explore on the return only after the timer is safe.

The Dragon's Dogma 2 beginner's guide explains how loss gauge, camping, lanterns, and quest urgency affect that decision.

Travel preparation that prevents failed routes

Before leaving a settlement:

  • Put the Eternal Ferrystone on the Arisen.
  • Carry a camping kit appropriate for the route.
  • Refill lantern oil before a night journey.
  • Check the quest log for hourglass icons.
  • Leave inventory space for materials and equipment.
  • Confirm the party has ranged damage and healing.
  • Mark the intended rest point or return destination.

Distribute weight across Pawns, but do not bury the Ferrystone in another character's inventory. Keep essential travel items where they remain available even if a hired Pawn is lost or dismissed.

Why a Ferrystone may fail

Ferrystone use requires open sky and enough room for the teleport effect. Move outside buildings, caves, and covered structures. Combat, certain quest states, or scripted sequences may also block travel.

If a Portcrystal does not appear as a destination, confirm that it has been activated or placed. A portable crystal sitting in storage has no map location. A crystal placed in an area affected by story progression may also become temporarily unusable.

When a route fails, do not spend repeated ordinary Ferrystones testing the same position. Change the environment first: leave combat, move into open ground, verify inventory, and select the destination from the map.

Portcrystal mistakes to avoid

  • Placing a portable crystal beside a fixed Portcrystal added by an update.
  • Forgetting to retrieve a crystal after a one-time quest moves elsewhere.
  • Carrying the Eternal Ferrystone in storage during an expedition.
  • Assuming Oxcarts cannot be destroyed during an ambush.
  • Sleeping through a timed quest because a later teleport seems faster.
  • Leaving no portable destination near a service used repeatedly.
  • Treating a late-game world-state change as a normal travel bug.

An efficient first-playthrough network

Activate Vernworth and use its two Oxcart directions while working through the early region. Claim the Eternal Ferrystone from Brant during Seat of the Sovran. Activate Melve, Harve Village, and Checkpoint Rest Town as their routes open, then continue to Bakbattahl and Volcanic Island Camp.

Place the first portable crystal at Sacred Arbor or another destination already proven to require repeat visits. Use the Monster Culling reward for the next persistent gap. Keep one movable crystal available for the current quest chain rather than committing every crystal immediately.

For the distant vocation maisters, the Dragon's Dogma 2 vocations guide pairs well with this route: Trickster lies in Battahl, while Magick Archer and Warfarer objectives are near the Volcanic Island region. The Dragon's Dogma 2 Guide Hub keeps those walkthroughs together, and the Dark Arisen release guide covers how the upcoming expansion and editions relate to the base game.
