Ace Combat 8 is putting its pilots in front of the camera as well as inside the jets. A new PlayStation Blog preview says most of the story scenes are shown from your character’s point of view. You can look around, answer a few simple questions and give orders to your squad during missions.
That is a change from the more distant cutscenes of earlier Ace Combat games. It does not turn the campaign into a branching role-playing game. According to the preview, your choices affect how people respond to you, but they do not change the main story.
What can you do during the story scenes?
Between flights, the camera stays with your pilot aboard the aircraft carrier Endurance. Some scenes let you move the view with the right stick. Others give you a prompt to press a button or answer yes or no with the D-pad. The PlayStation preview also says DualSense haptics are used during some moments. Those controller details are specific to PS5; Bandai Namco also lists Xbox Series X|S and PC versions.

Your pilot is still largely silent. The game uses the crew around you to make the war feel personal. Joker Flight members speak during briefings and on the radio, and the preview describes small exchanges that happen because of how you treat them. A squadmate can, for example, ask to help another group of pilots during an early mission.
Your squad can take orders in the air
Joker Flight is more than background chatter. You can tell wingmates to attack targets, come back into formation or cover your aircraft. Bandai Namco says these quick wingman commands return from Ace Combat 5. The story scenes give those pilots faces and personalities before you have to rely on them in a fight.

Radio calls also carry practical information. Commanders and pilots report what is happening around the battlefield, while ground troops can ask for help. If you respond, some characters acknowledge it and may appear again later. That is a way to make a mission feel connected to the wider campaign, even though the main plot stays fixed.
When can you play it?
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches on October 2, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Bandai Namco says eligible Deluxe and collector-pack preorders include early access starting September 29. Check the edition and your region before buying; the standard game launches October 2.
The newly detailed first-person scenes are only one part of the package. Bandai Namco also lists a separate online mode with co-op and competitive missions. For fans who come to Ace Combat for its single-player war stories, the question is whether more time with Joker Flight makes the people on the radio matter as much as the aircraft in the sky.
