The Sinking City 2 is built around limited resources, avoidable encounters, and investigations that can improve the next fight. A good first run is not the one that clears every room. It is the one that reaches the next objective with enough health, ammunition, and inventory space to keep exploring.

This spoiler-light guide covers the core systems on the current The Sinking City 2 game page. It does not reveal case solutions or story outcomes.

The Sinking City 2 quick-start checklist

  • Open the Pause Menu and use How to Play when a control or system is unclear.
  • Decide whether an encounter protects an objective, a resource, or only an empty corridor before spending ammunition.
  • Let aim focus, then target an enemy's weak point instead of firing quickly at the body.
  • Retreat or bypass a fight when health and supplies are low; many encounters are optional.
  • Collect clues and connect related evidence in the Investigation Space for progression resources.
  • Search E.R.C. crates and tables in dungeons for inventory-capacity upgrades.
  • Unlock shortcuts so a supply run does not require repeating the longest route.

Combat: survival starts with choosing the fight

Frogwares' official support guidance is direct: lower the difficulty when needed, focus aim before shooting weak points, and avoid encounters when resources are low. Those are not emergency exploits. They are part of the intended survival-horror loop.

Before entering a room, identify why the enemies matter. A fight may block the main route, protect a clue, or stand between Calvin and a useful side area. If the room offers no clear objective and another path exists, preserving ammunition can be the stronger choice.

Focus first, then shoot the weak point

Do not treat every available shot as a useful shot. Give the aim time to focus, identify the weak point, and fire when the target is exposed. Missing a hurried shot costs both ammunition and the time needed to create another safe opening.

When several enemies are present, keep an exit behind Calvin. The objective is not to hold the center of the room; it is to prevent the group from surrounding the player while a focused shot is prepared.

Leave a fight before it empties the inventory

Frogwares specifically recommends retreating, progressing elsewhere, and returning better equipped when health or supplies are low. If an encounter consumes most of the ammunition carried into it, continuing only because the first enemy is already down can make the next mandatory fight much harder.

Use a known shortcut or cleared path to disengage. A retreat that preserves healing and ammunition is progress, especially when an optional investigation can provide upgrades before the return trip.

Inventory: capacity upgrades are found in the world

Inventory space is not fixed. Frogwares says capacity upgrades can be found inside E.R.C. crates or lying on tables in some dungeons. That means a cramped inventory is also an exploration problem.

Check side rooms and marked containers before assuming the current limit is permanent. When the inventory is full, keep the resources needed for the next known objective and avoid spending ammunition only to create space. A bypassable encounter should not become mandatory because the player wants to empty a slot.

The official Steam description also emphasizes unlocked shortcuts and returning for supplies and upgrades. Open those routes when they appear. They reduce the cost of revisiting a district after finding more capacity or a stronger build.

Turn clues into Talent Points and Dream Essence

Clues are part of character progression, not only story context. Frogwares says players earn Talent Points and Dream Essence by finding evidence and correctly connecting related clues in the Investigation Space. Optional investigations can also award Dream Essence.

When a connection does not resolve, search the current area again before forcing a conclusion. A missing clue can be more valuable than another combat encounter because the completed connection may unlock a progression resource.

The Talent Table appears from the third Safe Room

Talents are unlocked and equipped at the Talent Table in a Safe Room. Frogwares notes that the table becomes available starting with the third Safe Room, so players should not assume the system is missing during the earliest section.

Once the table is available, treat a Safe Room as a planning stop. Review available Talents, current Dream Essence, ammunition, health, and the route back into the district before leaving. The build should solve the problems the player is actually meeting, not an imagined late-game setup.

Optional investigations are resource routes

The main story does not require every optional case. The official game description says these investigations do not gate progress, but can unlock safer routes, hard supplies, and upgrades. Frogwares' support material also identifies optional investigations as a source of Dream Essence.

That makes a side case useful when the direct story route is draining resources. Instead of repeatedly attacking the same difficult encounter, follow a nearby investigation, collect its clues, and return with a better route or stronger equipment.

Do not confuse optional with disposable. A case can be skipped for pacing, but its reward may be the most efficient answer to a shortage elsewhere.

A safer loop for the opening hours

  1. Check How to Play when a mechanic is introduced and the prompt is no longer visible.
  2. Enter a new area with a route back to the last Safe Room or shortcut in mind.
  3. Bypass enemies that do not protect an objective or useful resource.
  4. Search for clues, E.R.C. crates, and dungeon tables before leaving the area.
  5. Connect related clues in the Investigation Space instead of carrying an incomplete case forward without checking it.
  6. From the third Safe Room onward, review the Talent Table before returning to a difficult encounter.
  7. Use optional investigations when the main route is consuming more ammunition or health than it returns.

This loop ties exploration, investigation, inventory, and combat together. Treating them as separate systems is what usually creates the shortage.

What to change when progress stalls

You cannot win a combat encounter with the ammunition available

Lower the difficulty, focus shots on weak points, or leave the encounter. Frogwares confirms that many fights can be avoided and revisited later.

The Talent Table is not present

Continue until the third Safe Room. The table is not available in the first two.

You have clues but no Talent Point or Dream Essence

Open the Investigation Space and check whether the related clues have been connected. If the connection is incomplete, search the level for missing evidence.

The inventory still feels too small

Search E.R.C. crates and tables in dungeons for capacity upgrades. Use unlocked shortcuts to revisit areas without repeating the longest approach.
