If fish keep escaping, start with the 25g Training Rod and practice on easier fish before buying expensive equipment. Rod upgrades unlock bait and tackle, but buying a Fiberglass Rod does not automatically make the green fishing bar larger. This guide covers the standard game, without fishing mods.
Control the green bar, not the fish
Hold Use Tool to charge a cast, then release it. When the bite signal appears, press Use Tool again to hook the fish. During the minigame, your job is to keep the fish icon inside the green rectangle until the separate catch-progress meter fills.
Holding the button pushes the rectangle upward; releasing lets it fall. Use short presses to make small corrections. A long hold builds momentum, so release before the rectangle overshoots. If the fish stays near the bottom, avoid repeatedly launching the rectangle upward just because nothing seems to be happening.
The horizontal casting meter and vertical catching minigame do different jobs. A powerful cast does not win the catch for you.
Struggling at level zero? Buy the Training Rod
Willy sells the Training Rod for 25g. Below Fishing level 5, it gives you the green-bar size associated with level 5. It also slows the loss of catch progress when the fish escapes your bar. That makes it a practical learning tool, not simply a cheaper alternative to later equipment.
Its limits matter: it catches only basic fish and produces normal-quality catches. Neither bait nor tackle fits on it. You still earn fishing experience and collection credit, so practicing with this rod is genuine progression. Switch away when you want fish outside its restricted catch pool or better-quality catches.
Practice at the mountain lake
For a first-spring save, carp at the mountain lake are a useful practice target: their difficulty is low and they rarely move high up the minigame. They are available there in spring, summer and fall, at any time and in any weather. This is not a guaranteed carp-only spot, and the lake's carp advice does not carry over to winter.
If you are completing the standard Community Center bundles, keep a carp for the Lake Fish Bundle before selling your entire catch. Remixed bundles can change what your save requires.
Upgrade for a specific benefit
The Fiberglass Rod costs 1,800g at Willy's shop and unlocks at Fishing level 2. Its benefit is a bait slot, not a tackle slot. Buy it when you are ready to use bait and spend less time waiting between bites.
The Iridium Rod costs 7,500g and unlocks at Fishing level 6. It accepts both bait and tackle. Choose this upgrade when tackle will solve a problem you actually have; it is not necessary for learning the basic controls.
A Trap Bobber is useful when fish repeatedly leave the green rectangle: it slows the resulting loss of catch progress. It cannot be attached to the Fiberglass Rod. Check the rod's slots before buying accessories.
Why won't bait attach?
First check your rod. The Training Rod and Bamboo Pole do not accept bait; the Fiberglass and Iridium rods do. Having bait in your backpack is not the same as attaching it. Open the inventory and equip it on a compatible rod. On mobile, drag the bait onto the rod.
Ordinary bait speeds up bites; it does not keep the fish inside the bar. Rods can still catch fish without it. If waiting is your problem, bait helps. If the catch falls apart after hooking, concentrate on control, an easier target or suitable tackle.
