Kit Harington is the officially confirmed Gilderoy Lockhart for Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter series. The current HarryPotter.com cast list names Harington as the celebrity author who becomes Hogwarts’ next Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.

The official series overview places Harington under the cast joining for Season 2. It describes Lockhart as the immaculate author who makes his debut as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor.
Harington is best known for playing Jon Snow across all eight seasons of Game of Thrones. Lockhart asks for a very different performance: polished, theatrical, self-promoting, and increasingly exposed when the danger at Hogwarts becomes real.
HBO has not released a first-look image of Harington in costume. It also has not described his hairstyle, wardrobe, accent, or how closely the television version will follow Kenneth Branagh’s performance in the 2002 film.
Who is Gilderoy Lockhart?
Lockhart enters Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as a bestselling author with a long list of books about dangerous magical creatures. He arrives at Hogwarts already famous, and much of the school treats that fame as proof that he knows how to handle the attacks threatening students.
His lessons quickly reveal a gap between the stories and the wizard standing in front of the class. Lockhart is excellent at posing for photographs, staging public moments, and turning trouble into publicity. He is far less effective when a spell or creature requires real skill.
The character brings comedy into a season built around a darker mystery. His constant need for attention frustrates Harry and Ron, impresses Hermione at first, and makes the adults’ response to the attacks feel even more chaotic.

The official list says more names are still to come. A complete roster has not been announced, and HBO has not said whether every supporting character from the second book will appear in the adaptation.
Why the role gives Harington room to change tone
Lockhart’s confidence is the joke, but the part cannot work as a joke alone. The audience has to understand why students buy his books and why Hogwarts would hire him. That gives Harington space to make the professor charming before the story tests every claim he has made about himself.
A television season can also spend more time with Lockhart’s classroom failures, book promotion, interactions with Harry, and attempts to place himself at the center of the school’s crisis. The film condensed many of those moments to keep the larger mystery moving.
HBO has promised a new adaptation rather than a continuation of the films. Harington is not replacing Branagh inside the same continuity; he is playing a new version of the character for the series.
When will Harry Potter Season 2 be released?
Season 2 is scheduled to begin filming in autumn 2026, but HBO has not announced its premiere date or episode count. The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled for Christmas 2026 on HBO and HBO Max where available.
