HBO’s Harry Potter series now has two official teasers. The first season will debut at Christmas 2026, and its official title is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The series is a new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels, not a continuation of the earlier movies.
The teasers show the new Harry, Ron, and Hermione, but they also spend time on moments the films moved through quickly or never showed. Here is what HBO and the official Wizarding World material have confirmed so far.
When will the Harry Potter HBO series premiere?

What will Season 1 adapt?
Season 1 is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and will adapt the first novel. That means Harry’s life with the Dursleys, the arrival of his Hogwarts letter, his first year at the school, and the friendship that begins with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
The approved series information lists eight episodes for the first season. That gives the show more room than a single film to include smaller book moments, but HBO has not said which chapters will receive the most attention or how the season will divide its episodes.
Who plays Harry, Ron, and Hermione?
Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley. They are the new trio at the center of the adaptation, taking over roles that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint made famous in the film series.
The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. The casting gives the series a recognizable group of teachers around its younger leads without turning the show into a remake of the old performances.
What does the first teaser show?
The footage begins at Privet Drive, including Harry’s cupboard under the stairs and the Dursleys’ carefully controlled home. It also expands parts of Harry’s Muggle childhood: the teaser shows him being chased at school and getting the terrible haircut described in the book.

Hagrid and Harry share a trip on the London Underground, a brief scene that lets the series show their relationship before Hogwarts. The teaser also leans into the 1990s setting through the clothes, hairstyles, and everyday details around the Dursleys and the Weasleys.
Once Harry reaches Hogwarts, the teaser shows the Entrance Hall, the greenhouse, the Gryffindor common room, the Sorting Hat, and the moment his wand chooses him. It also includes Quidditch, new house heraldry, and a Christmas snowball fight. Several of those smaller scenes were only mentioned in the book or were shortened in the film.
How will Hogwarts look different?
The show keeps the familiar house colors and mascots while giving the school uniforms and crests a new design. The official teaser presents Hogwarts as a working school with classrooms, common spaces, robes, and routines rather than only a collection of movie locations.
That approach fits a television adaptation. The series can stay with Harry during the ordinary parts of his first year, then let the danger build around them. The trailer’s focus on school corridors, the train, and small family scenes suggests that HBO wants the everyday side of the books to matter as much as the final mystery.
Who is making the series?
Francesca Gardiner writes and executive-produces the series, while Mark Mylod executive-produces and directs multiple episodes. The production comes from HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. J.K. Rowling is also listed as an executive producer.
The casting is already moving into the second book’s world: Nicholas Hoult will play Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2. HBO has ordered that season, but it has not announced a premiere date or final episode count.
Is this a sequel to the Harry Potter movies?
No. This series starts the story again with a new cast and adapts the novels from the beginning. The eight-film franchise remains its own version of the books, while HBO’s show can use its longer format to bring back scenes and details that did not fit into the movies.
