Lanterns begins by showing Hal Jordan dead in 2026, then jumps back ten years and makes Kyle Chandler’s veteran Green Lantern one of its two leads. After Episode 6 returned to Hal’s funeral, some viewers accused DC of bringing him into the new universe only to remove him.
James Gunn has now answered that criticism. His response defends the show’s use of Hal, but it does not confirm that the character is alive.
Why are Lanterns fans upset about Hal Jordan?
Hal is one of DC’s best-known Green Lanterns, and many fans expected his first major live-action series to give him a future in the new DCU. Seeing his death in the opening minutes made the show feel like an ending before his story had properly started.

What did James Gunn say?
Gunn said Hal is the star of Lanterns and has appeared throughout the season so far. He praised Chandler’s performance and rejected the idea that the creative team does not respect the character.
He also pushed back on the claim that DC killed Hal immediately. The audience knows when Hal is supposed to die, but most of the story takes place before that point. Gunn left himself a little room by adding, “if that’s exactly what that is.”
Did James Gunn confirm that Hal Jordan is alive?
No. Gunn did not announce a fake death, a resurrection, time travel, or another version of Hal. His wording invites viewers to question the opening, but it is not proof of a twist.
Episode 6 treats the funeral as real from John’s perspective. The remaining episodes still have to explain how the 2016 investigation reaches that future and whether the opening showed the complete event.

Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, Nathan Fillion appears as Guy Gardner, and Ulrich Thomsen plays Sinestro. The season is built around John and Hal, while Guy and Sinestro connect their case to the wider Green Lantern world.
What is still unknown?
DC has not said whether Hal will return after this season or whether the story continues in a second season. The Lanterns release schedule shows when the remaining episodes arrive.
Gunn’s reply asks fans to wait for the full story. It does not erase the concern that Hal’s DCU future looks short. The finale now has to show whether the opening was a warning, a misdirection, or the end the series has been heading toward all season.
