Jensen Ackles has another lead TV role. MGM+ has ordered eight episodes of Rules of Prey, with Ackles playing Lucas Davenport, a former Minneapolis detective pulled back into law enforcement when a serial killer begins staging murders as messages to him.
Filming has started in Toronto. MGM+ has not announced a premiere date or any cast members beyond Ackles.
What is Rules of Prey about?
The series begins with a killer targeting Minneapolis residents and treating each crime as part of a personal contest with Davenport. To stop him, Davenport has to decode the killer’s moral logic while dealing with the methods that pushed him out of the police department in the first place.
Rules of Prey adapts the first novel in John Sandford’s long-running Prey series. The books have followed Davenport through dozens of cases, so MGM+ has plenty of material if the first season connects with viewers.
Who is Lucas Davenport?
Davenport is a sharp investigator who does not always stay inside the rules. MGM+ describes him as someone willing to let justice outrun procedure, which gives Ackles a role closer to a hard-edged detective than Dean Winchester or Soldier Boy.
The character also has an unusual life outside police work in the novels, including money earned by designing games. MGM+ has not said how much of that background will survive the adaptation.
Who is making the series?
Bruce Terris created the television version and will serve as showrunner. Daniel Sackheim will direct the pilot and second episode. Ackles is also an executive producer, alongside Terris, Sackheim, Scott Pennington, John Sandford, and others attached through Amazon MGM Studios.
Only Ackles has been announced for the cast. Any names circulating for the killer, Davenport’s colleagues, or his family remain unconfirmed.
Where will Rules of Prey stream?
The announced US home is MGM+, the subscription network and streaming service owned by Amazon MGM Studios. It is not being presented as a standard Prime Video original, even though MGM+ can be added through Prime Video in some markets.
MGM+ also plans to carry the series in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Chile. Availability elsewhere has not been detailed.
When will Rules of Prey premiere?
There is no release date yet. With an eight-episode season filming through late 2026, a 2027 debut is possible, but MGM+ has not promised that window.
Ackles already has an audience that follows him from Supernatural, The Boys, and Tracker. Rules of Prey now has to give them a detective worth following beyond the first case.
