Mortal Shell II is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The standalone sequel launched worldwide on August 20, and its official feature list confirms a major change for anyone used to the usual Soulslike rhythm: there is no stamina gauge. The game’s official site also highlights possession-based combat, a compact interconnected world, and more than 80 dungeons.
Cold Symmetry’s sequel still expects careful timing, but attacks and movement are no longer limited by a stamina meter. That changes the decisions players make in every fight without turning the game into a standard action brawler.
Why removing stamina changes the combat
The stamina bar is gone, while execution options, sidearms, and weapon upgrades take a larger role. PlayStation’s game listing describes the combat as agile and expressive, with precision still required even though players can attack and reposition without waiting for a gauge to refill.
In other Soulslikes, stamina controls how many swings, dodges, or sprints fit into a short exchange. Mortal Shell II moves that limit elsewhere. Players still need to read enemy attacks and find openings, but the fight is built around timing, positioning, and the tools each possessed warrior brings into the arena.

What is Mortal Shell II about?
Players control the Harbinger, a being tasked with reclaiming the Undermether’s stolen eggs from the creatures guarding them. The official description sends the journey through derelict temples, forbidden forests, icy graves, and citadels built from bone. The developer’s site says players can find new warriors to possess, then use their abilities and weapons to push deeper into the world.
The sequel is designed as a standalone game, so a player does not need to finish the 2021 Mortal Shell first. The setting and combat rules are new enough to explain on their own, while returning players will recognize the idea of using other bodies as part of the build system.
