Hans Zimmer does not want HBO’s Harry Potter series to sound like a replay of the movies. Speaking about the pressure of following John Williams, he said he would stay as far away as possible from imitation and try to give the new adaptation original music.
Zimmer is composing with Kara Talve and Anže Rozman through Bleeding Fingers Music. No theme or full track from the series has been released, so fans have not heard how different the score will be.
How different will the new Harry Potter score be?
Zimmer has described the direction, not the finished sound. His comparison was Man of Steel, another project that followed a famous John Williams score. Instead of rebuilding Williams’s Superman music, Zimmer started from a new musical idea. Harry Potter appears to be getting the same treatment.
That does not mean the film music has been dismissed. When the composer team was announced, its official statement said the new score would honor what came before. Williams wrote the music for the first three films, and “Hedwig’s Theme” stayed with the franchise long after he left.
Will Hedwig’s Theme return?
HBO has not confirmed whether the series will use “Hedwig’s Theme” or any other music from the films. A brief reference could still fit Zimmer’s plan without making the entire score sound familiar. Until HBO releases music from the show, anything more specific is guesswork.
When does HBO’s Harry Potter series premiere?
The series is scheduled to premiere at Christmas 2026 on HBO and HBO Max. Season 1 adapts Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and John Lithgow as Dumbledore. The opening theme will be the first real test of Zimmer’s approach. If it feels connected to Harry Potter without borrowing the movies’ identity, HBO will have found the balance it wants.
