American Hostage premieres Sunday, September 20, with two episodes on MGM+. Jon Hamm stars as Indianapolis radio reporter Fred Heckman, a trusted local voice who is pulled into a 63-hour hostage crisis that changes the news while it is happening.
The eight-episode series is based on the first season of the scripted podcast American Hostage and the real 1970s case involving Tony Kiritsis. Giovanni Ribisi plays Kiritsis, who takes a man hostage and insists that Heckman interview him live on the radio.
Fred Heckman becomes part of the story
Hamm’s character is not a detective or a negotiator. He is a reporter whose calm voice makes Kiritsis believe he will be heard. That trust places Heckman between the hostage-taker, the police and a newsroom trying to report the truth without making the danger worse.
The trailer sells the series as a psychological fight between two men who need very different things from the same microphone. Heckman wants to keep people alive. Kiritsis wants an audience and believes the reporter is the only person who will present his side.
The live-radio setting also gives the story a different kind of pressure. Every question can calm the situation or push it toward disaster, and the public is listening while the people in the newsroom make decisions with almost no time.

Hamm also executive produces the series. Ribisi’s Tony is presented as unpredictable, angry and deeply focused on controlling the story around him. The supporting cast includes Kristoffer Polaha as Dick Hall, William Jackson Harper as Ben Hairston, Mireille Enos as Barbara Heckman, Jonathan Tucker as FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally and Kat Cunning as Ibby Hall.
American Hostage is built as an ensemble, even though the radio calls sit at the center. Heckman’s family, colleagues, police officers and federal agents all face the consequences of what Tony says and does during the standoff.
The season runs through November 1
Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers co-created the series. MGM+ will release two episodes on premiere night, then continue weekly through the finale on November 1. The production comes from Sony Pictures Television and had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The show is also described as an anthology, which leaves room for future seasons built around different hostage stories. For now, the first season stays with Heckman and Kiritsis. The hook is simple and tense: a reporter answers the phone, and suddenly the entire crisis depends on what he says next.
