Start by learning the cast-and-reel controls on Fisherman Island, sell your catches, and keep enough coins for a boat. You do not need to buy every rod in the shop before exploring: the free Lava Rod is available from a fisherman in Kohana Volcano.
How to catch your first fish
Equip your rod and face the water. Hold the left mouse button to charge a cast, then release it. Once the fish bites, click rapidly to reel it in. Charging the throw and bringing in the fish are separate steps; repeatedly clicking before you cast is not the same as reeling.
Fish It! is not Fisch. If you are coming from Fisch, do not wait for its bar-following minigame here: Fish It! uses rapid clicks for the catch.
Where to sell and buy equipment
Fisherman Island is your starting base for selling fish, buying rods and bobbers, and finding a boat. Older references may call it Stingray Shores; that is the starting area’s former name, not an extra island you need to unlock.
Sell your catches at the fish merchant to turn them into spending money. Before buying, choose the next thing you need: better fishing equipment or transport to another island. A more expensive rod does not help you reach a new fishing spot if you have spent the coins you needed for a boat.
What the rod stats mean
- Luck affects your chances of a rarer catch. More Luck improves the odds; it does not promise a particular fish on the next cast.
- Speed affects how quickly you fish. Compare it alongside Luck if you want shorter catches, rather than choosing only by the biggest Luck number.
- Weight is the rod’s limit for the fish it can handle. A higher cap matters when you move on to heavier catches.
Bobbers are a separate upgrade. Seth’s Baits & Co on Fisherman Island sells them, starting with inexpensive options such as Topwater Bait. Compare the bonus with the price before committing the money you saved for travel.
Your first trip away from spawn
Use a boat to reach Kohana Island, then follow the Lava Rod walkthrough for the route to its volcanic area and the fisherman. The rod itself is free; buying transport is a separate expense.

Use the Fish Index to see which catches belong to each area. Moving to a different island or fishing in the open ocean gives you a different list to work through. Match your next trip to the fish you want, then check whether your rod can handle them.
