Sony reportedly stepped away from PHYSINT because the project was missing deadlines, heading over budget, and unlikely to remain a permanent PlayStation exclusive. A new report also says the revenue from Death Stranding and its sequel fell short of PlayStation’s expectations.

Sony and Kojima Productions have not confirmed those reasons. What they have confirmed is that PlayStation left the project, Xbox became its new publisher, and development is continuing.

Why did Sony reportedly drop PHYSINT?

The report points to four concerns: cost, schedule, expected profit, and ownership. PHYSINT was still years away, had missed development targets, and was on course to exceed its planned budget, according to people familiar with the project.

PlayStation was also reportedly reluctant to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a game it would not own and could not keep permanently tied to its hardware. Kojima Productions controls the PHYSINT property, just as it controls Death Stranding.

Did Death Stranding sales influence the decision?

According to the same report, both Death Stranding games brought in less revenue than PlayStation expected. No public sales target or financial result was provided, so this should not be read as proof that either game lost money.

It does explain why Sony may have become less willing to fund another expensive Kojima project. PHYSINT combines a large game production with film talent and technology. That ambition is part of its appeal, but it also raises the amount a publisher must recover.

What is Xbox taking on?

Xbox is not starting from zero. PHYSINT has been in development, and Kojima Productions has already announced actors Charlee Fraser, Ma Dong-seok, and Minami Hamabe. The game is described as a new action-espionage project, marking Kojima’s return to the genre he helped define with Metal Gear.

The new agreement also reaches beyond games. Xbox and Kojima Productions say they plan to work together on film and television projects, although they have not explained what those projects are or how they connect to PHYSINT.

Is PHYSINT still coming to PlayStation?

No platforms have been announced under the Xbox deal. Xbox is the publisher, but that does not automatically answer whether PHYSINT will be exclusive, launch on PC, or eventually appear on PlayStation.

Our earlier PHYSINT publisher report covers what each company officially said. The important update now is that Sony’s decision may have been less about the game’s concept and more about how much it could cost before reaching players.

PHYSINT still has no release date or gameplay reveal. Xbox kept it alive, but it also inherited the schedule, budget, and expectations that reportedly pushed Sony away.
