A Cyberpunk: Edgerunners game was reportedly being explored at WayForward, the independent studio behind Shantae and River City Girls. The project was never announced by CD Projekt Red or WayForward, and there is no confirmed release plan.

The report comes from MP1ST, which says it found the project in a former WayForward developer's portfolio and resume. The outlet withheld the developer's name. Readers cannot inspect that original material for themselves, so every detail should remain labeled as reported rather than confirmed.

What WayForward Was Reportedly Building

The project reportedly used the codename Gemini and was connected to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the Netflix anime set in the same Night City as Cyberpunk 2077. WayForward is said to have worked with CD Projekt Red during 2025 and 2026 on early research and development.

The idea was described as a 2.5D brawler. That usually means characters move through side-view levels while the environments use depth, layered art, or 3D elements. Players fight groups of enemies at close range, similar to older arcade beat-'em-ups and WayForward's River City Girls games.

The portfolio reportedly mentioned online integration and rollback-safe architecture. Rollback netcode is designed to keep fast online action responsive by predicting player inputs and correcting small connection differences. That wording suggests multiplayer was being considered, although no player count or game modes have been confirmed.

WayForward would be a believable studio for the concept. River City Girls combines side-view combat, cooperative play, bright character animation, and different attacks for each fighter. Edgerunners follows a crew whose members use guns, heavy weapons, hacking, and cyberware, giving a developer several distinct fighting styles to work with.

Nobody Has Confirmed What Happened to Project Gemini

There is no official statement confirming Gemini, and the report does not prove that it entered full production. Early development can include prototypes, technical tests, and design work that never becomes a complete game. No cast, story, platforms, publisher, price, or release window is known.

The project also should not be called officially canceled. MP1ST found references to a separate licensed Unreal Engine 5 game at WayForward that reportedly stopped after funding problems and layoffs in 2025. The outlet could not confirm that the Unreal project and Gemini were the same. Combining those two claims would create a conclusion the source did not reach.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an official ten-episode anime made with Japanese animation studio Trigger and released by Netflix. CD Projekt Red previously connected it to Cyberpunk 2077 through Update 1.6, which added equipment and secrets inspired by the show. A second Edgerunners series is officially planned for fall 2026, but no connection to Gemini has been announced.

The first series follows David Martinez, a teenager who installs military cyberware and joins a mercenary crew after a personal loss. Its story is separate from V's main campaign in Cyberpunk 2077, which lets newcomers watch it without finishing the game. That standalone structure could also have allowed a smaller action game to tell its own story without becoming another full role-playing game.

The reported game gets attention because the studio and format make sense together. Fans can picture David, Lucy, Rebecca, Maine, and the rest of the crew fighting through Night City in a cooperative brawler. That easy fit is not proof that the project survived beyond a prototype.

For now, Gemini is a reported experiment found in a former developer's work history, not a game that fans were promised. CD Projekt Red or WayForward would need to confirm the project before anyone can call it upcoming, delayed, or canceled. Until then, it offers a look at one possible direction for Cyberpunk outside the main role-playing games.
