The game is built for groups rather than solo play. Two or more players can participate, up to a maximum of 12. Before a session begins, the host chooses a world configuration for two players, three players, or four or more players; some challenges and world elements adjust to that choice. There is no single-player mode and no public matchmaking. The same host keeps the save and progress, so the group returns through that host to continue the journey.

Players move together through a wide-open world containing physical challenges, puzzles, exploration routes, and discoveries. Progress depends on coordination rather than combat or character classes. Proximity voice chat changes with distance, echoes through corridors, becomes muffled by walls, and can be carried through walkie-talkies. When normal conversation is restricted, players can use in-game text chat, gestures, pointing, waving, and objects such as binoculars, flares, laser pointers, megaphones, whiteboards, and walkie-talkies.

Big Walk is a complete, hand-crafted adventure with a beginning, middle, and ending. It also allows players to explore or spend time in the world between objectives. The host saves progress automatically, and friends can join through platform friend lists or a session join code. Accessibility options include rebindable controls, hold or toggle settings, multiple crosshair styles, field-of-view adjustment on PC and Mac, motion-reduction overlays, and the ability to skip any challenge.
