The Witcher 3 lets Geralt commit to Yennefer, commit to Triss, lose both by promising himself to both, or finish the main story without either romance. Most flirtation scenes do not decide the outcome. Two quests do: Now or Never for Triss and The Last Wish for Yennefer.
This guide contains relationship and quest spoilers. It covers The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and the Complete Edition. CD Projekt Red has announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered for September 29, 2026, but it has not announced changes to these story flags. The requirements should be checked again when that version launches.
The Short Answer
- To choose Triss, kiss her during A Matter of Life and Death, complete Now or Never, ask her to stay, and tell her “I love you.”
- To choose Yennefer, complete The Last Wish and tell her “I still love you, too.”
- If Geralt completes both commitments, It Takes Three to Tango triggers later and he loses both relationships.
- Optional encounters with Keira, Jutta, Shani, Syanna, or the brothels do not replace the Triss and Yennefer commitment choices.
Make a manual save before Now or Never and another before The Last Wish. These quests can fail or become unavailable when the main story advances too far.
How to Romance Triss
Triss's route develops through her Novigrad quests. The important choices arrive during A Matter of Life and Death and Now or Never.
Kiss Triss During A Matter of Life and Death
Help Triss attend the Vegelbud masquerade. During the hedge-maze sequence, choose the timed option to kiss her. This keeps the romance path moving toward the later commitment. The party also contains an optional Gwent tournament with a missable card, so players building a deck should finish those matches before following the quest to its conclusion.
The kiss alone does not complete the romance. Geralt still has to support Triss during the escape of Novigrad's mages and make the final choice at the docks.
Complete Now or Never
Agree to help Triss rescue the mages. Follow the route through Novigrad and the sewers until the group reaches the harbor. When Triss prepares to leave, choose “Stay with me,” followed by “I love you.”
Triss initially boards the ship, but she returns after Geralt speaks with Dijkstra. The lighthouse scene confirms the romance. Any other farewell ends the commitment path, even though Triss continues to appear in the story as an ally.
Now or Never also affects more than the romance. Ignoring Triss's request changes what happens to Novigrad's mages and can close political quests. Complete it before The Isle of Mists rather than leaving it in the journal.
How to Romance Yennefer
Yennefer's commitment is decided in The Last Wish, a Skellige secondary quest. Earlier scenes establish their history but do not lock the final relationship.
Complete The Last Wish
Accept Yennefer's request to investigate the djinn near Larvik. The quest follows Geralt and Yennefer across the coast and mountains of Ard Skellig as they try to break the old magical bond between them.
After the djinn is defeated and the spell is removed, Yennefer tells Geralt that her feelings remain. Choose “I still love you, too” to commit to her. Choosing “Sorry, but I don't want to be with you anymore” ends the romance while preserving their cooperation in the main story.
Do not confuse this with the optional scene during The King Is Dead — Long Live the King. That earlier encounter does not replace The Last Wish choice. The Last Wish is the commitment point.
What Happens If You Romance Both?
Committing to Triss in Now or Never and Yennefer in The Last Wish activates It Takes Three to Tango during Final Preparations. Triss and Yennefer invite Geralt to the Kingfisher Inn, reveal that they know what he has done, and leave him chained to the bed. Dandelion releases him the next morning.
The quest is not a path to a shared relationship. Geralt loses both women as romantic partners for the ending. Once both commitments are active and the quest has triggered, there is no dialogue choice that restores one of them. Returning to a save from before one commitment is the reliable way to change the result.
Can Geralt Romance Neither?
Yes. Let Triss leave without telling her that Geralt loves her, and tell Yennefer that the feelings are gone after the djinn's spell is broken. Geralt then completes the main story without either primary partner.
This result is different from trying to romance both. In both cases Geralt does not end the base game with Triss or Yennefer, but the dialogue and the path to that outcome are different.
Do Other Romance Scenes Affect the Choice?
Optional encounters outside the two primary routes do not cancel the Triss or Yennefer ending. Geralt can pursue Keira Metz, Jutta an Dimun, Madame Sasha, or encounters at the Passiflora and Crippled Kate's without changing the main commitment flags.
Hearts of Stone gives Geralt a separate relationship story with Shani, and Blood and Wine can include an encounter with Syanna. Those scenes do not create a second long-term partner in the base-game ending. The deciding conflict remains whether Geralt promises himself to both Triss and Yennefer.
Does the Romance Change Ciri's Ending?
No. Ciri's fate is controlled by Geralt's responses to her during late main quests, whether she visits Emhyr, and the result of the war. Choosing Triss, Yennefer, both, or neither does not add or remove a positive Ciri choice.
The romance does change Geralt's personal epilogue. A committed Yennefer path describes the two leaving politics and adventure behind. A committed Triss path places them together in Kovir. If neither relationship survives, Geralt continues without that partner ending.
Blood and Wine also uses the relationship state when deciding who may visit Corvo Bianco after its main story. A surviving commitment to Triss or Yennefer takes priority over the other possible visitors.
Romance Checklist
Before leaving Novigrad and Skellige, confirm the following:
- Decide whether the playthrough is for Triss, Yennefer, or neither.
- For Triss, kiss her during A Matter of Life and Death.
- For Triss, complete Now or Never and choose “Stay with me” and “I love you.”
- For Yennefer, complete The Last Wish and choose “I still love you, too.”
- Do not make both commitments unless the intended result is It Takes Three to Tango.
- Keep a save before each commitment quest so the choice can be changed without replaying the entire game.
