The Witcher 3 gives Ciri three main outcomes: she can survive and become a witcher, survive and become Empress of Nilfgaard, or fail to return after confronting the White Frost. The result is not controlled by one final dialogue option. It comes from several decisions that show whether Geralt trusts Ciri to act for herself.

This guide contains major spoilers for the end of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It covers the current game and Complete Edition. CD Projekt Red has announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered for September 29, 2026, but it has not announced changes to the story-ending requirements. These conditions should be checked again when that version launches.

How Ciri's Hidden Choice Score Works

Five moments can add a positive or negative result to Ciri's hidden score. One of them appears only if Geralt takes her to see Emperor Emhyr. If positive choices are equal to or greater than negative choices, Ciri returns from the White Frost. If negative choices outnumber positive ones, the darker ending plays.

With four applicable choices, two positive decisions are enough for Ciri to survive. If Geralt visits Emhyr and activates the fifth choice, three positive decisions are required.

The exact dialogue wording can vary slightly by platform or localization. Use the scene and action, not only a shortened quote, to identify the correct choice.

The Five Choices That Affect Ciri

1. Start the Snowball Fight

During Blood on the Battlefield, Ciri becomes frustrated with her training. Choose the response that says Geralt knows what might lift her spirits. This starts a snowball fight and counts as a positive choice.

Telling her that she does not have to be good at everything leads to drinking together and counts as a negative choice.

2. Refuse Emhyr's Payment

After the Battle of Kaer Morhen, Geralt can take Ciri to Vizima before traveling to Velen. This visit is optional and affects whether the Empress ending can happen.

If Geralt takes her to Emhyr, refuse the offered payment. Treating the visit as a completed contract counts as a negative choice; refusing the money counts as positive. Skipping the visit removes this choice from the score entirely.

3. Let Ciri Meet the Lodge Alone

During Final Preparations, Ciri prepares to speak with Philippa Eilhart, Margarita Laux-Antille, and the other sorceresses. Let her enter the meeting alone. Trusting her to handle the conversation counts as positive.

Going into the room with her counts as negative because Geralt takes control of a decision she wants to make herself.

4. Let Ciri Destroy Avallac'h's Laboratory

During Child of the Elder Blood, Ciri becomes angry after learning more about Avallac'h and his work. Tell her to go for it and join her in wrecking the laboratory. This counts as positive.

Telling her to calm down and giving her the necklace counts as negative.

5. Visit Skjall's Grave

Later in Child of the Elder Blood, Ciri asks Geralt to visit Skjall's grave. Go with her. The visit counts as positive.

Refusing because there is no time counts as negative. This is the last of the direct support choices before the ending sequence.

How to Get the Witcher Ciri Ending

Ciri must finish with positive choices equal to or greater than the negative ones. Geralt must also keep her from the Empress path.

The simplest route is not to take Ciri to Emhyr after the Battle of Kaer Morhen. If she survives the White Frost without that meeting, Geralt later gives her a silver sword in White Orchard and she begins life on the Path.

Ciri can still become a witcher after visiting Emhyr if Nilfgaard loses the war. That happens when Radovid remains in power or when Dijkstra takes control after Reason of State. In that situation the imperial succession route is no longer available, so a surviving Ciri takes the witcher outcome.

How to Get the Empress Ciri Ending

The Empress ending needs all of the following:

  1. Take Ciri to meet Emhyr during Blood on the Battlefield.
  2. Finish with at least three positive Ciri choices out of the five available moments.
  3. Complete A Deadly Plot and reach the required stages of An Eye for an Eye and Redania's Most Wanted so the assassination path remains available.
  4. During Blindingly Obvious, give Dijkstra information about Emhyr instead of forcing him aside. This unlocks Reason of State when the other requirements are met.
  5. Complete Reason of State before On Thin Ice, then side with Roche, Ves, and Thaler against Dijkstra so Nilfgaard wins the war and Temeria becomes a vassal state.

If these conditions are met, Ciri survives and later tells Geralt that she has accepted the imperial path. The ending does not mean the player selected “become Empress” in one menu. It combines Ciri's survival, the visit to Emhyr, and the political result.

How the Darker Ciri Ending Happens

The darker outcome occurs when negative choices outnumber positive ones. Ciri enters the portal to face the White Frost and does not return to Geralt. The epilogue follows Geralt as he hunts the last Crone and recovers Vesemir's medallion.

The game leaves some details open, but mechanically this is the failed-support ending. The way to avoid it is not to flatter Ciri at every moment. It is to trust her, refuse to treat her like a contract, let her handle the Lodge, support her anger at the laboratory, and make time for Skjall's grave.

Who Wins the War?

The war ending is controlled by the assassination quest line around Radovid and the final choice in Reason of State.

  • If Radovid survives because Reason of State is not completed, Redania defeats Nilfgaard and Radovid continues his persecution of mages and nonhumans.
  • If Radovid dies and Geralt allows Dijkstra to kill Roche, Ves, and Thaler, Dijkstra rules the North and defeats Nilfgaard.
  • If Radovid dies and Geralt defends Roche, Ves, and Thaler, Nilfgaard wins. Temeria is restored as a vassal state, and Emhyr remains in power.

This political result matters directly to the Empress ending. Nilfgaard must win for Ciri to take the throne. It does not change the positive-choice threshold that determines whether she returns from the White Frost.

Who Rules Skellige?

Skellige's ruler is decided through the an Craite quest line and King's Gambit:

  • Support Cerys while investigating the attack at the feast, and she becomes queen. Her epilogue focuses on stability and prosperity.
  • Support Hjalmar, and he becomes king. His epilogue describes continued raids against Nilfgaard.
  • Refuse to help either sibling after the feast or leave the succession quest unresolved, and Svanrige Bran becomes king and replaces the traditional elective system with a hereditary monarchy.

The Skellige outcome changes its regional epilogue but does not add points to Ciri's hidden score.

Does Romance Change Ciri's Ending?

No. Triss and Yennefer affect Geralt's personal epilogue, not Ciri's survival score. A player can reach the witcher, Empress, or darker Ciri ending while romancing Triss, romancing Yennefer, choosing neither, or triggering It Takes Three to Tango.

Use the Witcher 3 romance guide for the two commitment quests. Treat that decision as a separate checklist from Ciri's five support choices.

When to Make Manual Saves

Create separate saves at these points if you want to test outcomes without starting the entire game again:

  1. Before the end of Blood on the Battlefield, for the snowball choice and Emhyr visit.
  2. Before Ciri's meeting with the Lodge during Final Preparations.
  3. Before entering Avallac'h's laboratory during Child of the Elder Blood.
  4. Before answering Ciri's request to visit Skjall's grave.
  5. Before Reason of State, for the war result.
  6. Before choosing Cerys, Hjalmar, or neither during King's Gambit.
