Super Mario Sunshine joins the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 13, 2026. It is included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, so members do not buy the game separately, but an active subscription is required to open it.

Do you own the game through the subscription?

The August 2026 release is instead presented through the GameCube Nintendo Classics app. Nintendo’s announcement confirms the date and membership access, but it does not promise the same 16:9 HD treatment used in 3D All-Stars. The promotional material uses the GameCube presentation, so it is safer to expect an emulated classic release until Nintendo publishes exact display and performance details.
If you already own 3D All-Stars, there is no need to replace it just to keep playing Sunshine. The subscription version is most useful for Switch 2 owners who missed the collection, want the GameCube library in one app, or already pay for the Expansion Pack.
Controllers and the original GameCube feel
Super Mario Sunshine was designed around the GameCube controller, including analog shoulder inputs. Nintendo has not detailed every control option for this release in the announcement, so check the app’s controller screen when the game arrives. Standard Switch 2 controls should provide the required mapped inputs, while the official GameCube-style controller for Switch 2 may feel closer to the original layout.
Do not assume an old controller will work without the correct adapter or current Switch 2 support. The safest option is to use a controller listed as compatible with the GameCube Nintendo Classics app.
Will old save data transfer?
Nintendo has not announced a save-transfer path from the original GameCube memory card or from Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Those releases store progress in different systems, so players should expect to begin a new game unless Nintendo adds a specific transfer feature.
The Nintendo Classics apps normally manage their own save data and may include service-level conveniences. Exact Sunshine features should be confirmed inside the app after the August 13 update rather than assumed from another title in the library.

Sunshine sends Mario to Isle Delfino, where Shadow Mario has covered the island in graffiti and caused its Shine Sprites to disappear. The game has a brighter vacation atmosphere than most 3D Mario adventures, but it is also remembered for demanding platforming and unusual physics. Its secret stages remove F.L.U.D.D. and force players to rely on Mario’s basic jumps, while blue coins and hidden Shine Sprites reward careful exploration.
Is the Expansion Pack worth it just for Sunshine?
If Sunshine is the only game you want, compare the membership cost with the value of the full GameCube and retro catalog available in your region. The subscription makes more sense when you plan to play several included games or already use its other benefits. Existing Expansion Pack members receive Sunshine as another library addition on August 13 without a separate game price.
