PUBG: Black Budget has been canceled before its commercial release. PUBG STUDIOS announced on October 1 that it is ending development of the extraction shooter after reviewing the project’s progress and direction.

The studio said it could not see the current version providing an experience players would enjoy over the long term. It thanked the people who joined the closed alpha tests and said the team would use what it learned in future projects. The announcement did not give a replacement project or a new release plan.

Why was Black Budget canceled?

PUBG STUDIOS described a problem with the project’s direction rather than announcing a delay. The team has stopped development, so players should not read the old store page’s unannounced release date as evidence that another test or launch is still coming.

“We have therefore made the difficult decision to end development of PUBG: Black Budget.” — PUBG STUDIOS, October 1.

The statement does not disclose a budget or say that the cancellation caused layoffs. It also does not identify one mechanic or one test result as the reason. Claims that a particular competitor killed the project would go beyond the explanation the studio has given.

What were players supposed to do?

Black Budget was a separate first-person shooter, not a new Battlegrounds map. Players took the role of Contractors sent to recover secret technology from a research facility on an island trapped in a time loop.

Instead of staying alive until everyone else was eliminated, the goal was to escape with useful items. Surviving an extraction let players keep what they recovered; dying meant losing the equipment they brought into the mission. Rival squads and hostile creatures could interrupt a run.

The planned format supported up to 45 players, with squads of up to three. Between missions, players could expand a base, craft equipment and research their findings. A supernatural Anomaly made the island more dangerous as a session continued.

The tests never became a released game

Closed alpha tests took place in December 2025 and June 2026. They gave selected PC players access to an unfinished build, but Black Budget never reached a commercial launch.

The cancellation applies to this project, not PUBG: Battlegrounds. The battle royale remains a separate game.

For anyone waiting on a wishlist notification, there is no launch to prepare for. The screenshots and store description show what the team had been testing; the October 1 development update confirms that work has ended.
