Outer Banks begins with four friends looking for a missing father and the Royal Merchant. It ends five seasons later with the surviving Pogues back in Kildare, using recovered treasure to rebuild their homes and businesses. Between those points, the group chases the Royal Merchant gold, the Cross of Santo Domingo, El Dorado, and the Blue Crown.
The connecting thread is the Royal Merchant. John B starts by looking for Big John, the Cross and El Dorado widen the search, and Season 5 brings the group back to the first treasure after the Blue Crown hunt costs them JJ.

The Story in Five Answers

- Season 1: The Pogues find the Royal Merchant gold, Ward Cameron steals it, and John B and Sarah survive a storm while fleeing Kildare.
- Season 2: Pope learns that Denmark Tanny is his ancestor, the Cross of Santo Domingo becomes the new prize, and the Pogues end up stranded on Poguelandia.
- Season 3: John B reunites with Big John, the group reaches El Dorado, and both Big John and Ward die during the escape.
- Season 4: The hunt for Blackbeard's Blue Crown exposes Chandler Groff as JJ's biological father. Groff kills JJ and escapes with the Crown.

Season 1 Recap: The Royal Merchant

John B Routledge lives alone at the Chateau after his father, Big John, disappears while researching the Royal Merchant. A hurricane disrupts Kildare Island and gives John B, JJ, Pope, and Kiara a new clue: a wrecked boat connected to men who were also looking for the lost ship's treasure.
Big John's compass and the word “Redfield” move the search forward. John B eventually teams up with Sarah Cameron, a Kook from Figure 8 and the daughter of Ward Cameron. Their investigation leads to Denmark Tanny, the sole survivor of the Royal Merchant in the show's history. Tanny did not leave the gold in the shipwreck. He brought it ashore, and a letter points John B and Sarah to a well beneath an old house.
The Pogues find the gold, but Ward overhears John B and Sarah discussing it. Ward had worked with Big John and left him for dead after a dispute over the treasure. He takes the gold and sends it to the Cameron property in Nassau.
The other crime that shapes the finale happens at the airstrip. Sheriff Peterkin arrives to arrest Ward, but Rafe shoots her. Ward and Rafe frame John B for the murder. With the island searching for him, John B escapes by boat with Sarah. They sail into a storm and capsize. JJ, Pope, and Kiara believe the couple died, but John B and Sarah are rescued by a cargo ship headed to the Bahamas — the same place Ward sent the gold.
Where Season 1 leaves the story: the Pogues know Ward is responsible, the Royal Merchant gold is in Nassau, Rafe has killed Peterkin, and John B and Sarah are alive but on the run.
Season 2 Recap: Denmark Tanny and the Cross

John B and Sarah try to steal the Royal Merchant gold from the Camerons in Nassau. They fail to keep it, return to the United States, and reunite with the Pogues. Clearing John B's name becomes as important as getting the treasure back.
The season also turns Pope's family history into the center of the mystery. Pope learns that he is a descendant of Denmark Tanny. A key tied to his family leads toward the Cross of Santo Domingo, another artifact that was carried aboard the Royal Merchant in the show's mythology. Carla Limbrey wants the Cross because she believes a religious relic once hidden inside it can heal her.
The Pogues find the Cross in a church, but Rafe and Limbrey's half-brother Renfield take it. Rafe eventually brings the Cross to the Camerons. Ward, who had faked his own death, escapes with his family, the Royal Merchant gold, and the Cross aboard the Coastal Venture.
The Pogues board the ship and try to take both treasures. They rescue Sarah and nearly recover the Cross, but they are forced into a lifeboat. They drift until they reach an empty island and name it Poguelandia.
The last reveal changes John B's story again. In Barbados, Limbrey meets Big John. He survived, and he offers information in exchange for help finding his son.
Where Season 2 leaves the story: Ward and Rafe retain the treasures, the Pogues are marooned together, and Big John is alive.
Season 3 Recap: The Road to El Dorado
Spoiler warning — Season 3: This section reveals El Dorado's discovery and the deaths of Singh, Ward, and Big John.
Season 3 expands the hunt from the Caribbean to South America. The Pogues get off Poguelandia, but Carlos Singh draws them into his search for El Dorado. He believes Denmark Tanny's records and artifacts can lead to the legendary city of gold.
John B finally reunites with Big John. The reunion is real, but it is not easy. Big John is still consumed by the hunt, keeps information from the other Pogues, and repeatedly pulls his son away from the group. Their search focuses on the Gnomon of Solana and clues that can reveal the entrance to El Dorado.
The Pogues reunite for the final trip into the Orinoco Basin. Ward joins the expedition and secretly shares their location with Singh. Big John is shot, but he helps John B and Sarah solve the last clue. They enter the cave, find El Dorado, and take out a bag of gold as proof.
Singh dies when an explosion closes the entrance. A surviving attacker then threatens the group, and Ward sacrifices himself to save Sarah. Big John also dies from his wound after seeing that John B found the city he had chased for years.
The Pogues return to Kildare with proof of El Dorado. Just as their adventure appears finished, a stranger gives them a captain's log connected to Blackbeard.
Where Season 3 leaves the story: El Dorado is found, John B and Sarah lose their fathers, and Blackbeard's log creates a new trail.
Season 4 Recap: Blackbeard, the Blue Crown, and JJ
Spoiler warning — Season 4: This section reveals JJ's biological parents, the Blue Crown's location, and JJ's death.
The Pogues use their El Dorado success to build a shared home and business. Then JJ bets the group's remaining El Dorado gold on the Kildare Enduro and loses it, leaving them with property taxes to pay. Wes Genrette hires them to recover an amulet from Blackbeard's ship, The Adventure.
The amulet points to a Charleston crypt and the Mogador Scroll, a map tied to the Blue Crown. In the show's lore, the Crown is said to grant wishes and make its wearer nearly invincible. The Pogues learn that a special lens is needed to read the Scroll and that the trail leads to Morocco.
JJ's family history becomes part of that trail. Chandler Groff reveals that he is JJ's biological father and that Larissa Genrette was JJ's mother. Groff is a con man connected to the Lupine Corsairs. He uses JJ and the Pogues to get closer to the Scroll and lens, then abandons JJ at sea.
The group follows Groff to Morocco. JJ finds the Blue Crown inside a statue, but Groff takes Kiara hostage. JJ gives him the Crown to save her. Groff then stabs his own son. JJ dies in Kiara's arms, and Groff leaves with the treasure.
The surviving Pogues bury JJ in Morocco. Rafe points out that Groff has a buyer in Lisbon, giving the group a direction for revenge.
Where Season 4 leaves the story: JJ is dead, Groff has the Blue Crown, and the Pogues decide to go after him.
Season 5 Recap: The Last Hunt
Spoiler warning — Season 5 and series ending: This section reveals Groff's fate, the final treasure results, marriages, a birth, and every Pogue's destination.
The final season starts with John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, and Cleo grieving JJ. They have lost the Crown, their home, and their money. Rafe joins the group in an uneasy alliance as Groff, Dalia, the Corsairs, and Kook interests remain threats.
The hunt eventually circles back to the Royal Merchant gold, the treasure that started the series. Groff gets the gold and tries to escape during Hurricane Cassandra. Kiara catches him and cuts the rope supporting the mast to which he is holding. The mast falls and Groff sinks into the storm.
The Pogues recover the gold. Kiara briefly uses the Blue Crown in the hope that its supposed power could restore JJ, but the encounter gives her a chance to say goodbye rather than bringing him back. The Corsairs leave with the Crown, so it does not become the group's final prize.
Back in Kildare, the Royal Merchant money has a practical purpose. The Pogues buy property and rebuild: John B restores the Chateau, Kiara buys back the Maybank property, and Pope rebuilds Heyward's Seafood. John B and Sarah marry after their daughter is born, and they name her JJ. Pope travels to the Bahamas and proposes to Cleo again; she accepts and later appears with a naturalization certificate. Kiara begins a marine-biology internship. Rafe and Sofia leave Kildare by boat, and Rafe joins the wedding by FaceTime.

How the Treasures Connect

The Royal Merchant gold begins John B's search. Denmark Tanny's survival connects that shipwreck to Pope's ancestry and the Cross of Santo Domingo. Season 3 explains that sailors aboard the Royal Merchant stole the Cross from the San Jose, a ship tied to El Dorado; Tanny's records then help Singh and Big John follow the Gnomon of Solana. After the Pogues find the city, Blackbeard's captain's log introduces the amulet, the Mogador Scroll, and the Blue Crown.
Season 5 closes the circle by returning to the Royal Merchant gold. The Pogues use it to restore the Chateau, the Maybank property, Heyward's Seafood, and Tannyhill rather than opening another map.
Who Survives the Series?
