Their relationship starts in Season 1 when John B needs Sarah's help following the Royal Merchant trail. They come from opposite sides of the island. John B is a Pogue from the Cut; Sarah is a Cameron from Figure 8 and is dating Topper. Working together gives Sarah a closer look at Ward's secrets and gives John B an ally inside the family connected to the gold.
Sarah chooses John B after Ward and Rafe frame him for Sheriff Peterkin's murder. She escapes Kildare with him, survives the storm, and helps him pursue the stolen gold in Nassau. In Season 2, the pair exchange vows on the boat even though the ceremony is symbolic rather than legal.
Their loyalty does not remove every conflict. Sarah grieves when Ward appears to die, while John B struggles to understand her attachment to the man who harmed his family. In Season 3, John B becomes secretive while following Big John, and Sarah briefly reconnects with Topper. She ultimately returns to John B and chooses the Pogues.

Their connection begins as friendship. Kiara is close to every member of the original Pogue group, and early seasons also explore Pope's feelings for her. JJ and Kiara's romantic story becomes explicit in Season 3. When Kiara's parents send her to a wilderness camp, JJ goes after her. The rescue ends with both of them acknowledging that their feelings are mutual.
Season 4 tests the relationship through JJ's family history. He learns that Chandler Groff and Larissa Genrette are his biological parents. Kiara stays with him as the Blue Crown trail turns that revelation into another betrayal. In Morocco, Groff takes Kiara hostage. JJ gives him the Crown to save her, and Groff stabs JJ after the exchange. JJ dies in Kiara's arms.
Season 5 does not reverse his death. Kiara hopes the Blue Crown might bring him back, but her experience is a farewell, not a resurrection. Her final path toward marine biology lets her continue a life connected to the ocean and the values she carried throughout the series.

Cleo first meets John B and Sarah aboard a cargo ship in Season 2. She helps them escape Nassau, then reconnects with the full group. By Season 3, the Heywards have given her a home. Her bond with Pope grows while both are adjusting to what the treasure hunt has taken from them.
One of their defining moments is not romantic on the surface. Cleo stops Pope from shooting Rafe in revenge. That decision shows the balance between them: Pope can become consumed by family history and loss, while Cleo understands when survival requires walking away. They kiss and become a couple by the end of Season 3.
Season 4 puts them through the death of Terrance, Cleo's former father figure. Lightner kills him during the hunt for the amulet, and Pope later shoots Lightner in Morocco. The violence gives their shared story a cost beyond treasure.
The final season gives them a future outside the chase. Pope travels to the Bahamas and proposes to Cleo a second time. She accepts, returns to the United States, and appears with a naturalization certificate.
Do Rafe and Sofia Stay Together?

Sofia enters Rafe's life in Season 3. She works catering and bartending jobs and does not belong to his usual Figure 8 circle. Their different class backgrounds matter in Season 4 when Sofia hears Rafe say he would never date a Pogue. She then steers him toward a corrupt Goat Island development deal in exchange for a payout.
Sofia feels guilty but accepts Rafe's proposal without telling him what she did. Rafe learns about the arrangement and ends the engagement. At the same time, his relationship with Sarah begins to change. He listens when Sarah explains that Ward died saving her, and he helps the Pogues pursue the Blue Crown.
By the end of Season 5, Rafe breaks Sofia out of jail and Shoupe lets them go. The Pogues help them get a boat, and Rafe joins John B and Sarah's wedding by FaceTime. The finale places them together outside Kildare without stating a final country or city.
Why Sarah and Topper Do Not End Up Together

Topper is Sarah's boyfriend when the series begins. Their relationship represents the life Sarah is expected to choose: Figure 8, Kook status, and a future that does not challenge Ward.
Sarah leaves Topper after falling for John B. Topper still helps her at several points, and their history returns when John B's behavior pushes Sarah away in Season 3. Sarah and Topper briefly reconnect, but she chooses John B again. Topper responds by setting fire to John B's house.
Topper's final relationship status is clear by Season 4: he is dating Ruthie, while Sarah is building a family with John B.
Did Pope and Kiara Date?

Pope has feelings for Kiara early in the series, and they briefly try a romantic relationship. It does not last. Their different expectations make it clear that the connection works better as friendship.
The series does not treat that history as a permanent rivalry between Pope and JJ. Pope later falls in love with Cleo, and Kiara's relationship with JJ grows independently. The Pogue friendship survives the change.
Sarah and Rafe's Sibling Relationship
