Gears of War: E-Day is giving players an early look at its multiplayer before the full game launches. Early access to the Open Beta begins August 6, 2026, and you can secure it by preordering any edition. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members are also included in Xbox's early-access offer.

The Coalition has not announced the exact starting time, full public-open dates, preload schedule, or final list of beta maps and modes. The official wording says there will be Open Beta weekends beginning August 6, so expect more than one limited test period rather than a permanently available beta.

This guide separates the confirmed access rules from the details still waiting for an announcement.

The official Gears of War beta page confirms August 6, 2026 as the start of early access.

Microsoft's current store fine print says the early-access period is expected to run from August 6 through August 10, but it also warns that dates may vary by platform and subscription. Treat August 10 as the expected end of early access, not a final worldwide deadline.

The Coalition describes the test as multiple Open Beta weekends, but it has not published the complete schedule. We still need official dates for:

  • The end of the early-access period
  • The first fully open weekend
  • Additional beta weekends
  • Regional start and end times
  • Preload availability

Do not plan around unofficial countdowns. The official edition page warns that timing and platform availability can change.

How to get early access

You have two confirmed routes into the early-access period:

  • Preorder any edition of Gears of War: E-Day
  • Use an eligible Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription

Standard, Premium, Premium Upgrade, and Collector's Edition purchases are all listed within the preorder program. You do not need the expensive Premium Edition just to enter the beta early.

The beta is called open because broader access follows the early period. The exact date when non-preorder players can join has not been announced.

Digital preorders do not need a beta code

If you digitally preorder Gears of War: E-Day through a supported storefront, beta access is attached to your account automatically. You will not receive or need a separate code.

Use the same Microsoft or Steam account that made the purchase when the beta client becomes available. If the download does not appear after preloading begins, check the game's library page and the account's owned content before contacting support.

Xbox Play Anywhere applies to purchases made through the Xbox ecosystem, allowing one supported purchase across Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Steam remains a separate purchase and account.

How physical preorder beta codes work

Physical preorders can receive a beta code from participating retailers. The code may be printed on a receipt, sent by email, or provided at the point of sale.

Because participation can vary by store and region, confirm the beta offer before completing the purchase. Keep the receipt and check spam folders if the retailer delivers codes by email.

If your physical preorder promises beta access but no code arrives, contact the retailer first. The Coalition does not control when each store distributes its inventory of codes.

Does Game Pass include beta early access?

Xbox Wire states that Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers can receive early access to the first beta weekend. A separate preorder is not required for those eligible plans.

The standard console plan may not include every multiplayer or early-access benefit. Check your exact subscription name instead of assuming that any Game Pass tier qualifies.

Online multiplayer on console may also require a subscription that includes online multiplayer. Subscription requirements can vary by platform and region.

Which platforms will have the beta?

The full game is available for preorder on:

  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Xbox on PC
  • PC through Steam

The official beta terms say that platform availability will be announced and can change. Those three systems are the expected test platforms because they are the current preorder surfaces, but wait for the beta schedule before assuming every weekend opens on every platform at the same time.

An internet connection is required. The official pages have not confirmed a cloud-streaming beta option.

What will be playable in the beta?

The Coalition has not published the final beta playlist. Gears of War: E-Day's confirmed multiplayer package includes Horde Siege and Versus, but that does not guarantee that both will appear in every test weekend.

Horde Siege is a new large-scale PvE mode built around multiple squads, shared objectives, larger city maps, classes, and world bosses. Versus returns with focused 4v4 PvP, Ranked and Social play, new maps, and modernized movement.

For a full breakdown of the confirmed modes, read the Gears of War: E-Day Horde Siege and Versus guide. The beta article will be updated once The Coalition names the maps, modes, progression, and rewards included in the test.

Will beta progress carry into the full game?

Progression carryover has not been confirmed. Do not assume that levels, unlocks, stats, or customization earned during the beta will transfer to the October release.

Betas often reset progression because their purpose is to test servers, matchmaking, balance, and stability. Gears of War: E-Day may offer a participation reward, but no such reward has been announced.

If The Coalition confirms a permanent item, the official beta page should explain the requirement clearly, including whether you need to complete a match, reach a level, or play during a specific weekend.

Can you preload the beta?

The beta preload date and file size are still unannounced. Preloading is likely to be helpful for a limited weekend, but it should not be treated as confirmed until the client appears on Xbox and Steam.

Players with digital early access should watch their game library. Physical preorder players should redeem their code as soon as the retailer sends it. Game Pass members can check the E-Day product page and Game Pass app once Xbox publishes the download instructions.

The beta will be a separate, temporary client or download unless The Coalition says otherwise. Storage requirements may differ from the full game's size.

When does the full game release?

Gears of War: E-Day launches on October 6, 2026. The Premium Edition includes up to five days of game early access beginning October 1, which is separate from the August multiplayer beta.

The game supports Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Xbox Play Anywhere, and Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. Online campaign co-op supports four players, while console split-screen supports two.

For the beta, remember the one date that is firm: August 6 is the early-access start. The full open schedule, times, preload, and playable content still need official confirmation.
