The Coalition has given players a detailed look at Gears of War: E-Day multiplayer. The July 30 presentation explains how its 12-player Horde Siege mode works and confirms the launch lineup for 4v4 Versus.

Both modes were first announced during the E-Day Direct on June 7. The new information covers missions, classes, maps, movement, progression, cosmetics, and the August beta.

Horde Siege Uses Three Squads of Four

Horde Siege puts three COG squads of four on one large map in Kalona. Each squad receives its own mission and can meet the other groups while moving through the same area. The squads are not following one shared objective list as a single 12-person unit.

The Coalition describes it as a 12-player mode, but it has not explained whether every match needs all 12 players. Details about bots, backfill, and smaller private lobbies have not been announced.

Players can choose from three mission playlists. Blitz takes about 15 to 20 minutes and includes one or two objectives. Siege lasts around 20 to 40 minutes with several objectives. Horde uses one defensive position for 10 waves and can take 50 to 60 minutes.

Many objectives use R.I.G. devices that scan Locust tunnels. Squads may need to secure an area, repair or defend a R.I.G., or survive a Horde mission. Optional tasks award equipment, temporary Squad Perks, and Weapon Parts. At least one squad member must reach the final extraction to keep the Weapon Parts collected during the mission.

Large Invasion Events can bring a Corpser or Brumak onto the map and affect all three squads. A major enemy can block extraction or shut down supply points until players deal with it. Energy is shared within each four-player squad, while every player chooses how to spend their share.

Four classes will be available in the beta and at launch: Assault, Breacher, Marksman, and Medic. Each class has a starting loadout, a passive combat bonus, Tactical Gear, and 30 progression levels. Horde Siege also supports weapon modifications, including changes such as adding a bayonet to the Gnasher.

The August beta includes the Golden Quarter Horde Siege map. The full game launches with three Horde Siege maps, and The Coalition plans to add more after release.

Versus Returns to 4v4

Every launch Versus mode is 4v4. Players begin with equal loadouts, weapon modifications are disabled, and stronger weapons must be collected from the map. Six symmetrical maps will be available at launch, with familiar lanes, cover positions, and power-weapon locations.

E-Day also adds more movement. Players can jump, vault, and slide across maps with low cover, different elevations, rooftop paths, and gaps. The Coalition says it wants movement to feel smoother while keeping the cover-based combat that defines the series.

Four core modes are confirmed. Team Deathmatch keeps a shared pool of team lives and adds dynamic spawns. Conquest keeps one zone active until a team fills its capture timer. Demolition uses a neutral bomb and two enemy bombsites, then removes respawns after the bomb is armed. Crucible asks teams to carry a Power Core into a zone that moves and becomes smaller. The carrier can also fire the Core as a weapon.

Ranked and Social playlists will both be available. Social includes Quickplay, matches against bots, and limited-time modes. Boot Camp and four-player Combat Training give new or returning players a place to learn the controls and maps.

The game will not have a battle pass or Tour of Duty. The Coalition says almost every cosmetic can be earned by playing. Premium Edition items, charity bundles, and a small number of partnership items will remain paid exceptions.

Release Date, Platforms, and Beta

Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X and S and Windows PC through the Xbox app and Steam. It supports Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud play, while Steam lists cross-platform multiplayer. No native Xbox One or PlayStation 5 version has been announced. The game will be available on day one through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

Early beta access is expected from August 6 to August 10 for preorders, Game Pass Ultimate members, and PC Game Pass members. A later open weekend is planned for everyone, but Xbox has not announced its exact dates. The August test will give players their first chance to see whether the larger Horde Siege structure and 4v4 Versus changes work outside a controlled presentation.
