The new A Different World cast photo puts the original Hillman stars and the new students in one room. Debbie Allen, Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison join Maleah Joi Moon and her classmates in the image released as the Netflix series begins streaming.
The photo makes the handoff easy to see: actors from the 1987 sitcom stand with the performers now leading the story. Allen directed and produced the original show. She returns as an executive producer and directs the new series’ premiere.
Who returns to Hillman?
Guy plays Whitley Gilbert-Wayne again, and Hardison reprises Dwayne Wayne. Their daughter Deborah is now a first-year student at Hillman. Darryl M. Bell also returns as Ron Johnson; his son Shaquille, played by Cornell Young IV, is part of the new class.
Cree Summer returns as Freddie Brooks, who now teaches law. That puts her in the orbit of Rashida Duvall, a criminal justice student played by Alijah Kai. The familiar characters have jobs and families of their own, but Deborah and her friends drive the new season.
Who leads the new class?
Maleah Joi Moon plays Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Whitley and Dwayne. Her classmates include Rashida, Shaquille, Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece) and Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche).
Deborah arrives at Hillman with a famous family name, but the story follows her own first year of school. Shaquille has a link to another original character through his father Ron, while Rashida learns from Freddie. Those relationships connect the two casts without requiring new viewers to know every episode of the older show.
